What is RSS and how do I use it?

Everything you need to know about RSS, but were too afraid to ask...

What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is essentially a news feed. Should you subscribe to one from a specific website, you will receive notification of when new content has been published in the form of the latest headline appearing in your news reader.

Which RSS feeds are available on FiveFWD?

What is a news reader?
To use the RSS function you will need a news reader – a piece of software that allows you to read any new articles that appear. There are a variety of different news readers available, some of which are browser-based and some of which are downloadable applications.

If you’re using a browser-based reader, you can keep up to date with your RSS feeds from any computer. Downloadable apps, meanwhile, will only allow you to store them on your computer.

How do I subscribe to RSS feeds?
Fist pick what content you would like to subscribe to. So, if you want the very latest and up-to-date Gadget Show news stories for example, all you have to do is hit the RSS button in that area of the website. Then either drag the URL of the feed into your news reader or cut and paste the URL into a new feed in your news reader. It's as simple as that.

How can I get a news reader?
There are a variety of different new readers available. Some are even included in email software, such as Mail. Be careful, though, as different readers work on different operating systems. Here is a brief list of newsreaders available:

Windows:
Newz Crawler
FeedDemon

Mac OS X
Newsfire
NetNewsWire

NewsGator
Microsoft Live
Google Reader
