Samsung Galaxy S Advance

G-Rating

Rating of 3

The basics

The Samsung Galaxy S Advance is an Android smartphone fitted with Samsung’s 4-inch Super AMOLED screen. The Android phone has a dual-core 1GHz processor, 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls, and up to 16GB of internal memory, or up to 32GB when paired with a MicroSD card.

The good

Those looking for a mid-entry device would do well to check out the Galaxy S Advance. Its 1GHz processor may pale in comparison to some of the more powerful smartphones on the market, but it still handles apps, games and web browsing with ease. While its speed may not compare to smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S3, its performance is still pretty good. The Galaxy S Advance can also be proud of its photo skills. Images look good, clear, and full of colour, made to look even better on the 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, which makes pictures look bright and snazzy. The ability to download apps and games is another highlight. And with plenty to download from the Google Play store, it’ll take a long time to get bored of the smartphone, with games and fun apps to keep anyone occupied. Not just Angry Birds, either.

The bad

A lack of Android 4.0 is a bit of a downer. Instead, users will have to make do with the older Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, which is still very capable, but you’ll be purchasing an out of date user experience. Another problem that may crop up is that newer apps and games may be incompatible with the ageing operating system. And on looks, the Galaxy S Advance isn’t the most desirable of smartphones. Its design mirrors that of the Samsung Galaxy - an old design that now looks dated next to the newest devices.

The bottom line

Despite its ageing operating system, the Samsung Galaxy S Advance remains a handy handset for those looking for a cheap smartphone with many of the features found in the top smartphones. For those on a budget, the Galaxy S Advance is still worth a look.
