HTC One X

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The HTC One X is one of HTC’s newest Android smartphones, unveiled in February 2012 at the Mobile World Congress. It has a 4.7-inch screen, the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich interface, 1.5GHz quad core processor, up to 32GB of storage and an 8-megapixel camera with full HD video recording.

The good

Polycarbonate seems to be the in thing these days. It’s what the HTC One X is made of, giving it a smooth, sexy finish, especially in white. Its unibody build ensures a solid feel: one that feels good to hold. For a phone with a large 4.7-inch screen it feels surprisingly nimble.

Aspiring owners will also be pleased to know that the battery has enough stamina to last a full day with everything chugging away. So you can browse the web, use apps and check your social network accounts without fear of the battery dying on you.

The Nvidia Tegra 3 processor inside delivers fast performance during all the above. Gaming, internet, browsing apps all comes easily to the HTC One X. It makes using the device an absolute joy to own.

The 8-megapixel camera is also very impressive, delivering great results in most conditions. It also takes pictures very quickly, making it great for capturing those fleeting moments. And we love the ability to take snaps during filming.

The bad

Unfortunately the HTC One X’s screen isn’t as impressive as Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus panel, losing points in contrast. Blacks also do not come out quite as well either.

Navigating can also feel a little old school, with nav’ buttons appearing as capacitive keys below the screen instead of being part of the screen itself.

Is this the best budget smartphone ever?

The bottom line

The HTC One X might have a couple of minor niggles but that doesn’t detract from what is a brilliant top-performing and fully-featured Android smartphone.

I got one of these yesterday, until now I have been a 'Blackberry' guy. Only, I am not keen on their new offerings,I think that they have kinda lost their way....So after a lot of soul searching, i decided to forego Blackberry messenger. I am well impressed with the HTC, only two minor niggles thus far though, it hasn't got a micro memory card slot and it didn't come with 'beat' headphones, just the normal cheap generic ones :(. Will keep you posted.....

Git the HTC One X last Saturday. Never had a smart before and it was recommended to me by my son. It is extremely fast at everything it does, beats my friends Galaxy easily. Would definately recommend it.

One x...wow! Super fast, no lag. A really slick mobile to use and look at. If your going to pick holes I did wonder why HTC didn't Give it an amoled screen? but I'm really not to bothered. I hear talk that there's lack of added micro sdcard, remember you have 25gb dropbox free. If your a hotmail user a further 2gb through cloud all in all you have a whooping 59gb more than enough space. Plus as long as you utilise the dropbox space in the 2 years you still get access after. Burst feature on the camera, Amazing! The mobile to own! I agree beats headphones should of been included.

I bought this phone 1 month ago, and all I can say is it's the best phone I've ever had, my last phone was the HD2 which I bough on it's launch day. I agree the headphones are no good and it would have been nice to be offered Beats audio headphones, I'd love to see what they offer. All in all I'm very happy with my phone, only problem is the battery though there is an update available, but it will not update onto my model, I'm working on that though

Traded in my iPhone 4 for the one x, its a fantastic phone, my first foray into android, a LOT quicker than my iPhone, beautiful screen and very light, best phone I have ever had:)

I've had the HTC oneX for 5 weeks and so far we are doing fine together. One thing to be aware of, is that its a bit slippery in the hands. But amazing overall, wouldn't change it for anything else.

Hi, well I've had the one x in black since the day it was released on Orange and can honestly say its the best phone I've ever had, every other phone inc. HTC Desire S,I Phone 4s, HTC Sensation xe, have all been "well its good but i wish it was a bit quicker, or i wish it did this better" but I have not said that once about this phone! its super fast, super clear, the touch screen is perfect, much better then the galaxy 3 , and the sense ui it so smooth you wont ever wont to buy an android phone without it! I've had a mobile phone for over 20 years and change it at least once a year, but I can honestly say I cant imagine having to change this phone for a very long time! If you want the best, this is it!

Are you guys nuts? Nearly every review I've read has raved about the one x screen, trusted reviews called it the best screen they've seen. Phone is great, feels good and solid in the hand. Only thing I'd change (this goes for any android) is lack of proper docking, though HTC did show a unit in Barcelona (let's get it to market HTC!!).

I have had my HTC one X for a month now and I love the speed, but it has problems like the lens scratches easily and It's hard to use one handed also I have the matt white version that is slowly turning gloss, buy the polycarbonate back cover with its perpetrated holes and all is perfect, also looks superb in black on the white phone.

I was thinking of getting the HTC One S as my new phone and was wondering what the difference is between the One S and the One X is?

I think this review was just trying to find something wrong. The screen is a matter of opinion. Personally I think that the screen is perfect. The colours are very accurate and bright. Amoleds come with a pentile pixel configuration which makes everything look cross hatched. The pixels this screen are so small you can't see them. Look at other reviews they will all say this screen is perfect. As for the buttons, the only phones to have on screen buttons is the nexus series. All other phones give you real buttons which again in my opinion are better so you can hardly call it old school. The iphone has an actual button that you push that does break (personal experience) you don't go calling that old school.

Got the HTC One X roughly three months ago and can honestly say I do not know how I lived without it. Amazing phone, quick, sharp and to say its a smart phone really easy and simple to use yet clever. IPod? no need. Portable DVD player. Ditto. Laptop. Sorted. High quality camera and camcorder. Got it. Why have any other device?

Htc one x has a better screen than the Samsung amoled and has true rgb unlike the Samsung it's been proven in side by side tests. No extra storage space who is using more than 32 gb plus 25 of Dropbox ???

Wow, the screen on the One X isn't as good as a super amoled display? I find that hard to believe. Like someone already said, every other trusted review of this phone specifically state that the One X has the best display they've ever seen on any smartphone. Did you guys actually compare the super LCD2 display on the One X to a super amoled or are you just falling for Samsung's marketing ploy? Yes, super amoleds have deeper blacks and better contrast but the colours on the One X are still very vibrant and most of all they're way more realistic looking. Besides apart from blacks, every other colour looks better on the One X, whites are whites on this phone, unlike super amoleds which display whites with a blue tint. And dont forget the insane viewing angles on the One X. Rant over lol.

Got my One x on the day that it was released. It was released glitchy and with the same operating system as galaxy s3 but with other substandard software to it. I had to watch as these two phones were compared side by side on many video reviews with the s3 winning as the faster smartphone on Youtube, then htc launched its software update to equal the s3 software. Now the One x is faster than the s3 but not many reviewers on youtube are bothering to try another comparison.

Got my HTC one x recently & it's ok not amazing. Sort of wish I'd gone for s3. Little things like not having sky gon google play. I have unlimited data so really want to utilise this.

I had this phone before I got an iphone 5. The One X was a great phone (better screen quality than the s3, and audio and photos). However, battery life was a problem. I thought about a One X+ but went for an iphone. I miss the larger screen size. However, the better resolution on the iphone means it's a better reading experience for me for reviewing documents (and battery life is a lot lot better!)

It's a good phone but battery life isn't great(the big screen comes at a cost) and does not have a micro sd slot. Other than that it's fine but the lack of external storage is disappointing.

Battery life not best if using the phone to play games, also long winded to get to make a call.

I for one hope that HTC continue to use LCD rather than AMOLED. Personally I find samsung's new AMOLED screens horrible to look at.
