Cool-er Classic eBook reader

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The colourful Cool-er aims to be cheap and is definitely cheerful, and thumbs its slender, lightweight nose at its more serious rivals from Amazon and Sony. But does this book have more substance to it than its cover? We turn the page to find out.

The good

There's more than a little Apple flavouring about the Cool-er's styling, with its rounded edges and iPod-esque control pad. It sits nicely in the hand too thanks to its scale-friendly weight of just 178g. We liked the matte screen too, which stood up to a couple of extended reading sessions without giving us headaches. The feature list may be as thin as its waif-like body, but the flipside is welcome simplicity – we were up and reading within 20 seconds the first time we switched the Cool-er on. And thanks to software updates, the minor glitches of the previous incarnation of this model have been resolved – and there's also faster page-turning speed.

The bad

The Cool-er is probably our favourite eBook reader in terms of looks, but it's a little flimsy – it almost feels too light. And given that £189 is far from pocket change, we do expect a little bit more from our readers, even ones specifically designed for ease of use and mobility. There's no touchscreen, no wireless and basic file management. For pointless annoyance value, the micro 2.5mm headphone jack also deserves a mention.

The bottom line

If you want to read books on a funky little reader, the Cool-er is a fine choice. But we're waiting for the new WiFi model, the Cool-er Connect.

Maria

Cool-er is the worst ebook ever! I bought it as a gift for my father. Display has problem, it became dark, got some lines on the screen, which dont disappear. Books have problems as well: you turn off Cool-er, when you turn it on again, it has to open on page you left. No, it opens on main menu, you need to search for a book and often even for a page. It was a terrible gift, such a shame. Do not advice to buy Cool-er to anybody. Just wasting money.
