Toshiba Satellite Z830

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The Toshiba Satellite Z830 might look like a laptop, but if it could speak it would tell you it’s an ultrabook - a new breed of laptop with impossibly thin dimensions, but still packing top-end specs. The Satellite Z830 is 0.83 cm thin and weighs just 1.12kg and has a 13.3-inch screen that can display movies in 720p high definition. It comes with an Intel Core i3 or an Intel Core i5 processor. The Z830 also has 3 USB ports, an ethernet port and has an 8-hour battery life.

The good

Make no mistake, the Satellite Z830 is a sexy-looking laptop owing to its metallic stylings and thin dimensions. Weighing just 1.12kg it is thinner even than Apple’s 13-inch MacBook Air. The Toshiba Z830 can also boast a good selection of ports. There are 3 USB ports in total, leaving plenty of opportunity to plug in accessories such as memory cards a controller for gaming and a mouse. There’s even room for an ethernet port if needed. The speakers too are very good. Laptop speakers can be hit and miss, but not here. Sound is clear, full of detail and with little distortion. A subwoofer under the chassis helps the speaker sound great when watching films and playing games. Speaking of which, the Satellite Z830 is adept at handling some of the best PC games well with no sign of slowdown. Should you use the Toshiba Satellite Z830 outdoors you’ll also find that its screen performs well even in sunlit conditions. Its viewing angle is great.

The bad

There aren’t too many downsides to the Toshiba Satellite Z830, but one of the most noticeable is that it can heat up quite a lot during use. You won’t be able to leave it on your lap for too long. The other negative here is the price. A new Toshiba Satellite Z830 with an Intel Core i3 processor will set you back around £900, and a few hundred more for an Intel Core i5 processor. However, look around online and you should be able to find one for a lot cheaper.

The bottom line

The Toshiba Satellite Z830 is a trendy, lightweight computer that ticks all the boxes. it’s thin, powerful and does everything asked of it without fuss. The Toshiba Satellite Z830 might be a little on the pricey side but it’s still one to watch.

This is a great ultra book, I use it daily for work. Its performance is great, out performing my company brick. Especially multi tasking using Webex or Lync and presenting etc. I am trying to move away from paper and notebooks etc. this with Office 2013 installed is the perfect performer. It is lighter than my previous pen & notebook. and carries the added bonus of being able to find those meeting notes in an instant. Speedy boot up time is great along with excellent battery life. Downside it seems to have pretty sharp corners on the chassis.
