Toshiba NB510

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The Toshiba NB510 is a thin 10.1-inch netbook that measures 13.6mm at its thinnest point, and weighs 1.25kg. It has an Intel dual-core processor and 320GB of hard disk space for documents, photos, music and movies. There’s also an SD card slot for sharing your photos from a memory card, and a USB 2.0 port for accessories and USB memory sticks. HDMI connectivity lets you share pictures with a HD TV. The Toshiba NB510 has a 9-hour battery life.

The good

For a little thing, the Toshiba NB510 is built like a miniature powerhouse, built to withstand the inevitable knocks and scuffs sure to come its way - an essential attribute for any netbook. The NB510 also does well in the connectivity stakes. If you don’t have a wireless internet connection, the NB510 has an Ethernet port to stick a cable in for your web-surfing needs. You’ve also got a handy couple of USB 2.0 ports should you wish to plug in a mouse and a memory card. The keyboard and touchpad also work very well to make for a responsive experience. Some netbooks seem to struggle in providing a decent keyboard, but not this one. The touchpad is equally delightful to use. As performance goes, the Toshiba NB510 is great for handling the usual tasks of web browsing, documents and the odd bit of gaming action, making the NB510 great for getting a bit of work done on the train, but load it up with video-editing packages and it might show the strain. That said, the NB510 is an able performer of you want to get the basics done.

The bad

If there’s one area laptops and netbooks need to improve, it’s audio quality. The same applies to the NB510. The speaker isn’t nearly loud enough to get the most from any digital movie collection, or games you own. There’s just no punch to the sound at all. Toshiba promises around 9 hours of battery for the NB510, but the reality is closer to just over six hours, which is still very good, but not quite the nine many will expect.

The bottom line

The Toshiba NB510 won’t wow anybody, but for a decent price, it gets the job done.

It's nice for taking to conferences, the reason i got this rather than a tablet was because the memory and HDD is expandable where you just can't do that with an IPAD! and it's small, in theory those that have ipads often have to take a spare external keyboard with them also as touch screen can get irritating if you have allot to type. So why not just have a notebook

The 1Gb RAM is pretty useless. Double it a.s.a.p. You can buy a decent 2Gb for about £10.00 and installing it is a doddle. Makes a good difference. If you uninstall the trial McAffee security programme, it might leave a rogue VBScript entry in your registry resulting in an error message on startup. However, this appears to have no affect on performance. If, like me, you have a 3-machine license with another security package, why bother with purchasing McAffee? (If you haven't there's a couple of good freebies in AVG (Virus security) and Comodo (Firewall)) The CPU is too slow and Windows starter edition is very basic - one effect of which is that Windows and security software updates sometimes take an extraordinary amount of time to install. You can easily think your machine has frozen. Doesn't seem to be a Caps Lock light or any indicator of disk activity. The keyboard is very good - I find I make fewer typing errors with it than on my full-size laptop. You might need to keep a list of Function Keys operations handy - there's a lot of options. A good machine with a lot of connectivity. The built in bluetooth and wireless work very well.
