ASUS Zenbook UX31E

Rating of 4

The basics

The Asus UX31E is a thin lightweight laptop with a metal unibody build. It has a 13.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1600 x 900. Inside you’ll find a 1.7GHz Intel Core processor, 4GB of RAM and a 256GB Solid State Drive and audio powered by Bang & Olufsen.

The good

The ASUS UX31E borrows the kind of stylings seen on Apple’s Macbook Air. It looks trendy and thin, yet feels solid. This is one desirable bit of kit that any gadget fan would be proud to call their own. However its 13.3-inch screen gets one over on the MacBook Air with a higher 1600 x 900 resolution display. Look around and you’ll see you can get it at a cheaper price, too. Films, games and webpages look great on the ASUS UX31E. Its 13.3-inches gives plenty of room to work with, yet it still manages to retain that compact feeling. So its form does have a function. The speakers are also excellent. Powered using Bang & Olufsen tech, we’d expect no different. Laptop speakers often leave a lot to be desired, so it’s with open arms that the ASUS UX31E and its speaker skills are welcomed. Sound is clearer, and filled with more detail than you’d get with traditional laptop speakers.

The bad

The keyboard feels hit and miss. The keys don’t have as much give as some would like, but anyone would soon get used to typing on it. However the trackpad fares less favorably, and is nowhere as smooth as the glass trackpads found on the MacBook Air. Battery life is not the best. At full charge in regular use the ASUS UX31E will keep going for around 5 hours. With other laptops just as thin offering close to ten hours, the ASUS UX31E is found wanting.

The bottom line

Minor complaints aside don’t detract from what is a powerful laptop with a great screen, sexy design and quick performance in whatever it does. At around £1,000 it’s a little on the pricey side, but as alternatives to Apple’s MacBook Air go, the ASUS UX31E is worth considering.

Really - budget for £1,000. Either do the reviews properly or do not bother . Plenty of good ones out there for £400+. Just cos you get them free from the manufactures - stop being biased.

God I expected something vaguely affordable for the average person but you would have to save a lot for that! MacBook is cheaper than £1000! You can't just go out and buy that unless you're richer than most! Nice laptop though.
