Humax HDR-FOX T2

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

If money is no object and you absolutely have to have the best image quality, usability and features, Humax's HDR-FOX T2 is calling. Loads of storage space, media file streaming and razor-sharp HD pictures make this the Freeview box to beat.

The good

The box produces truly excellent sharp-edged HD pictures and good quality standard definition images, but its skills don’t stop there: rig it up to your Internet connection and you can stream on-demand content from iPlayer and Sky Player. You can also stream the programmes you’ve recorded on the HDR-FOX T2 to other UPnP devices on your home network – your laptop, for instance. Meanwhile, the USB connection supports not only media playback but can be used to increase recording storage space – just rig up a thumb or hard drive. Oh, and the user friendliness of the menus is another strong point.

The bad

Flaws are notable by their absence here, but if we’re nitpicking we’d point to the fact you can’t set the box to output the source’s default resolution – in other words, for most users it’ll upscale standard def broadcasts to 1080i. You might want that job done by your TV instead.

The bottom line

Well-made, dependable and serving up great pictures, the Humax HDR-FOX T2 is the best Freeview HD box on sale at the moment. Don’t forget its media-wrangling capabilities though.

Yikes

I can't beleive it doesn't switch HDMI automatically, my HDMI goes through the home theater so not auto switching means hassle looking for another remote. Even SCART auto switched the AV. Why did no-one mention this...

Given the features of this unit, when compared to the alternatives, HDMI switching for me was low down the list - giving ground to other feature-rich capabilities. There are alternatives for anyone choosing this unit... 1. Use a eparate HDMI auto-switch to share (for example) an AV HDMI port with another peripheral - for example, a DVD or BlueRay player. 2. Grab a programmable all-in-one remote (I use the 'One For All' remote for everything), where you can not only choose codes and use teach mode, but can also program macro's, purchased from a very large/famous online retailer. Macro's enable you to press a chosen button which then fires off a sequence of codes, such as turning on the receiver, telling your theatre centre to switch port, etc.

Purchased HDR Fox t2 - ITB new in November 2010. Started freezing and other problems within a month. Replaced without quibble by Humax in December 2010 and box worked great until one month ago when it started hanging/freezing and became unusable. I have used many boxes over the years but this is the most unreliable and expensive box I have ever had. I would not recommend to anybody as there is obviously a problem with the this box.

I purchased my Foxsat-HDR three years ago but seeing that it was installed at my holiday home it only received a small amount of usage. Last night it stopped working so I don't really call this value. For the money I paid for it! I won't be buying another one!

This is a very capable freeview recorder but DON'T believe the marketing about being able to watch recordings from your laptop or pc. This is wrong, you CANT! They are all encrypted for legal reasons. See for yourself, google it! I'm disappointed at the gadget show researchers haven't tested this claim

Purchased my Humax HDR t2 last year July. Last two months started to freeze and skips frames. I installed a Arial amplifier but still the same probs. I had a Topfield that gave better service and was half the price. Me thinks they use cheap components so will not recommend Humax. May look to Panasonic
