The basics

The Toshiba 55ZL2 is a 55-inch full high definition LCD TV capable of displaying 3D pictures without requiring the viewer wearing 3D glasses. It uses a Quad full HD resolution display of 3840 x 2160. The Toshiba 55ZL2 also features built-in Freeview HD, built-in Wi-Fi, Smart TV features to use YouTube, Facebook, and other apps, and four HDMI ports, one SCART, 1 PC input, two USB slots and DLNA compatibility.

The good

At times 2D images are of such high quality that it’s easy to forget that you’re actually watching a television. The images displayed on the Toshiba 55ZL2 are some of the most lush you’ll see anywhere. The Toshiba 55ZL2 excels at making the most of bright colours, making it a great TV for playing video games. 3D viewing is pretty impressive too. Without glasses the effect feels a lot more natural. The Toshiba 55ZL2 uses head-tracking technology to tell it how many people are watching, adjusting the 3D effect accordingly to each person watching, the result is that even of you’re slightly side-on, the 3D effect will still work. Better still, 3D images look great without sacrificing on sharpness, and are just as bright as 2D images. Home cinema fans will also be pleased to know that the Toshiba 55ZL2 sounds great, too.

The bad

There are times when some objects in the distance can appear out of focus during the 3D experience, and you will have to keep your head still to truly appreciate the 3D effect. Sitting still is the price to pay for the privilege of not having to wear glasses. The £7k price tag is enough to stop anyone but the most well-heeled even contemplate purchasing the Toshiba 55ZL2. The Toshiba 55ZL2 is a very good glasses-free 3D TV, but that’s a lot of cash to pay for the pleasure.

The bottom line

The Toshiba 55ZL2 is a glorious television and a glimpse into the future of the kind of standard to expect from glasses-free 3D TVs in future, but at £7k it’s just too pricey to be good value for it. Not that it stops us wanting one of our own.

Folks this is by far the worst glasses free TV I've seen. There's no depth, it looses tracking anytime another person joins the viewing point, etc. The Philips-Dimenco is much better with 48 viewing angles & by far the best I've seen is Alioscopy's which looks as if things coming out of the screen will fall in to your lap. Toshiba is also very expensive when you consider the Gadmei T883 Android 4 glasses free tablet is only £150 and has significantly better depth! In 18-24 months glasses free will be mainstream. Until then LG passive is the market leader by a long way.
