The basics

Experience the latest in home entertainment with Pioneer PDPLX5090-UT. It is a 127cm HD ready 1080p plasma tv which was released on June 2008. This plasma tv is about 93 mm thin and has an integrated digital terrestrial tuner. It also has an Improved Optimum Mode plus optical light sensor created to automatically adjust the brightness, sharpness, and colour of the screen to harmonise with the surroundings.

The good

"A telly's a telly." That, dear readers, is the comment of someone who's never turned on the PDP-LX5090. Hi-Def pictures look nothing short of stunning on the 50-inch screen. Colour reproduction is vibrant, edges are beautifully crisp, and the black levels are (just like the flashers of yester-year) as bottomless as ever, even in standard definition. It really excels though, when teamed up with a Hi-Def source via one of the three HDMI ports.

The bad

Criticisms? Well, it's expensive, but that comes with the territory. It's also got a reflective screen surface, which means for optimum performance you'll need to put it in a dark room. Sound quality from the detachable speaker panel (which costs extra) is reasonable, but we'd certainly suggest this screen deserves a better sound system. And while we're at it, how about four HDMI ports?

The bottom line

If you're looking for the best television in its class, then this is it. OK it's expensive, but so's a Ferrari and we still want one of those.

well newled backlight tvs are too expensive over normal lcd tellies. OLED technology is going to be ultra expensive and the product life issue has still to be resolved, alsomaking them in large sizes. SED technology atill beng developedsnd will probably only be for high-end/professional/commercial use because they will be ultra expensive too. lcs screens with flourescent backlights are getting better, but all this leaves plasma systems as the best bet to date; japan controls the plasma tv world and longer term plans to shift plasma further up-market - more expensive, whle they try to make their huge lcd factory investments pay. panasonic's new neo-pdp plasma tvs and top monitors, maybe worth a good look too. fujitsu developed the plasma screens we know today, FHP - fujitsu-hitachi plasma ltd., have produced some spectacular plasma too; so hitachi units could be worth considering, they are usually priced well.hitachi now hold some important plasma patents too, some aquired from fujitsu labs.i would not under estimate the future potential for plasma development, even now it is the best-proven, longest-lived option.

ITV may well be on its last legs but Thank God we have Channel 4 and Channel 5 making a grand job of news in respect of 4 and good old consumerism in the case of 5 I love The Gadget Show, and the expertise of its chief presenter who's brought all that used to be good about the BBC to commercial telly. The Beeb's day is practically over and about time too. Why should we have to pay for Which reports? These folk get my vote 'cos they agree with me and I' m pretty good at sorting "wheat from the chaff" My own Pioneer plasma PDP 5000 EX is brilliant and in comparison this particular model is seriously cheap! Incidentley, can someone tell me why SKY won't invest in 1080p instead of trousering its vast profits? So far as the Show and website are concerned... Bloody Great! Keep up the good work.

I bought mine six months ago and I have to say, I haven't been disappointed. The black levels are superb, like a very deep hole on a dark night, in 1080p those black levels and the vibrant colours give great depth to the picture almost as if your looking through a window. I can't comment on the Pioneer speakers that are sold separately, as with any flat screen TV, the speakers that come with them have to be just as flat to match the style but end up giving tinny sound quality, and technology at the moment means that to get decent bass you have to have a fair sized speaker. A top class goggle box like this deserves better audio. That's why I decided to team this TV up with a Yamaha 7.1 surround amp receiver and a set of B&W 685 theatre speakers with 10" sub woofer, and in a small/medium sized room, enough bass to rearrange your internal organs, woohoo! All in all, the best picture quality I've seen yet in Plasma or LCD if you don't mind the price tag, but you do get what you pay for.

I just bit the bullet and got a real bargain as it was the last in the shop. After some serious haggling the price dropped and the side speakers were thrown in. After getting it mounted to the wall, I was blown away by the picture quality. The kids love it as they can watch Sponge Bob on the big screen! The side speakers are OK, but even when compared to a decent centre speaker they are flat and lack real clarity. But good enough for everyday TV. I have a Yamaha 7.1 surround amp for when we sit down to watch films; the big bass and sound quality together with the picture quality even suprised the missus (and as you know lads, that's not easy...). Cost, well I knew it was expensive, but every review and magazine I had read always gave it maximum marks and I can totally see why. Great features as well, like the auto ambience screen adjust. Nice one Pioneer, but such a shame they have now pulled out of the market. I think we may live to regret that... Nice one Gadget Show, the whole family loves your show, being a D&T Teacher as well I always 'big it up' in lesson. As I say to them, Gadgets & Suzi Perry... where's the discussion!!!

Love the look of these Tvs have seen them working missed out on a bargain, as R/sounds had 2 left from there displays rooms going for £799 each but had to pick up as no boxes, so never got one,and was not going to plymoth a bit far, this was a good few months ago, I could have got one and put it on the BAY and made a packet, and still have not got a new TV, I thought about getting one of these but as they had been running for 2 years I decided not, never thought about there 5 year for £79 LoL bit of a twit. So what is left have been looking at the Panni G20 50 inch but just not sure, can't aford the the V series so any one got a clue what to get ? have got up to £1300 to spend and that's it?

PDP LX6090 - When you tell people the size and the price they consider you a fool, now however even my wife's friends (the most critical of all) are in envy of it's glorious picture (and sound thanks to a Pioneer LX82 Reciever/Bowers and Wilkins PV1 Sub/Monitor Audio Gold Series Speakers). The list price for all this was around £10,000, I shopped around picked up some ex-demo and sales and paid around £7,500, worth every penny!

thw warlier commentator on alternative technologies (OLED, SED) is right, i think. plasma is now good value. my yamaha 42 inch- a hitachi design built by fhp, is gorgeous/ it uses the now obsolete alis screen technology. if you find a tv with this out there, try it. my yamaha has digital class d amplifiers, good enough to drive my yamaha ns1000m monitors. these use be drivers, developed in early 70's and never surpassed imo. you dont need sub-woofer if you use full-range speaker systems. just need to be sensitive enough or be driven by amp/receiver. the imaging from a good stereo pair beats surround- sound av set-ups in most cases. nd you have them available for first-class music replay too, using switch box. best value overall
