Sony Walkman A865

G-Rating

The basics

Sony has always excelled when it comes to portable music players, and the Sony Walkman A865 is no exception. Join us after the break to find out if it's worth buying one to use instead of your smartphone.

The good

First off, the Sony Walkman A865 is an impressive gadget from a styling point of view, with a large touchscreen for watching movie clips and to navigate the menu. Unlike lots of other media players that try to take on smartphones in a head to head, the Sony Walkman A865 is literally just about the music and video. As such, there are plenty of features missing, but that doesn't really detract from the overall experience. Instead, the Sony Walkman A865 is a great little player, providing excellent sound quality. The in-ear headphones are better than most bundled solutions, providing a crisp and clear sound, and when the battery dies, you won't be left without your smartphone. You'll be able to pick from a host of storage options, from 8GB right up to 64GB.

The bad

Unfortunately, there's no microSD card slot, which will put some users off. Sony has also omitted Wi-Fi and web browsing, not wanting to compete with tablets and smartphones. The biggest criticism is a lack of support for lossless audio formats, and a relatively limited supply of video codecs – so you may well have to convert your movies if you're more interested in watching content than listening to it.

The bottom line

Despite that, the Sony Walkman A865 is still a great MP3 player, and we'd love to use one alongside our smartphone.
