Sony NWZ-Z1060 Walkman

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The Sony NWZ-Z1060 Walkman is an Android-based portable music player. It has a 4.3-inch TFT LED backlit display, 32GB storage, USB connectivity voice recording, an FM tuner and a 14-hour battery life. Compatible music formats include MP3, WMA, WMA non-DRM, JPEG, MPEG-4, AVC, H.264/AVC and WMV 9.

The good

The Sony NWZ-Z1060 is a well constructed device that's also easy on the eye, and just 11.1mm thick. You’ll barely feel it in your pocket. True, smartphones may be the music players of choice these days for many, but only dedicated tune chuckers such as the Sony NWZ-Z1060 offer the battery stamina to last the day and beyond. The NWZ-Z1060 will easily play music for over 20 hours straight, and lasts for more than five playing video. Using the Sony NWZ-Z1060 is also a pleasure. The Android interface ensures that music lovers are never too far away from all the latest apps and their favourite features, thanks to an operating system that is easy to use. Crucially, it also makes navigating music a breeze, done so using finger swipes to flick through albums and songs. A 32GB storage capacity means Sony NWZ-Z1060 users will have plenty of room for them, with room to spare for downloading additional Android apps. With all that space, owners will have more than music to keep themselves entertained. The Sony NWZ-Z1060 is also adept at playing video. The backlit TFT display produces bright colours and sharp pictures. And yes,the quality of music playback is also far beyond that heard from Sony’s smartphone range, delivering strong, clear sound - just what anyone would want in a portable music player.

The bad

While the Sony NWZ-Z1060 may offer playback of close to 20 hours, it still takes a colossal amount of time to reach full charge. We’re talking several hours. A proprietary USB port meanwhile means owners may need to fork out more cash for extra accessories and cables instead of ones you might already have lying around - most Android devices charge via a micro USB cable, but not this one. There's also the Sony NWZ-Z1060’s lofty price tag to consider. Stores such as Amazon currently have the recommended 32GB version for sale at £320 - more expensive than a 32GB Apple iPod Touch (£249).

The bottom line

The Sony NWZ-Z1060 is an impressive music player that delivers all the features and sound quality a music fan could want, but the price is just too high to make it worth recommending. Unless you really don't like iTunes, an iPod touch and all its apps represent slightly better value.
