The basics
The Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a compact micro four thirds camera with an interchangeable lens. It has a 16.3 megapixel LiveMOS sensor, shoots full 1080p high definition video, and has an ISO of 200-25,600, what Olympus claims to be world’s fastest autofocus, and 9 frames per second high-speed shooting.
The good
One of the first things you'll notice when holding the Olympus OM-D E-M5 is its very high build quality. It’s tough, robust in feel and comes weather sealed to protect itself against grubby dirt particles and moisture, making the Olympus OM-D E-M5 ideal for shooting in testing conditions.
The Olympus OM-D E-M is pretty stylish too, in a very retro kind of way that keeps things simple, but still has a lot going on with it. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 also fits well in the hands, although using a neck strap is always the preferred way to spend the day with any camera.
Images are bright, sharp, and show lots of colour and detail. The rear 3-inch OLED panel makes framing shots a pleasure. It’s really quick, too, so you’ll be able to reel off shots at fast and efficiently.
The autofocus as promised by Olympus is also incredibly fast to help prime you for better photo-taking opportunities. The enthusiast will find lots of controls to play around with, and offering lots of photography options and settings.
The bad
At around the £1,000 the Olympus OM-D E-M5 does not come cheap, which is likely to put many off, or encourage enthusiasts to go for alternative DSLR cameras. A lack of microphone output means that the more enthusiast among photographers will have to spend extra on an adapter.
The bottom line
The Olympus OM-D E-M5 has a wealth of features sure to impress most keen photographers, enthusiast or those new to micro four-thirds cameras. Excellent photos, good build quality and a blistering autofocus make the Olympus OM-D E-M5 one to check out.
