Nikon Coolpix S3100

The basics

The Nikon Coolpix S3100 sits at the bottom of Nikon's digital camera range, offering an affordable entry to high-definition videos and sharp photography. At under £100, it's a stylish and compact option.

The good

With the cameras on mobile phones getting better year on year, the days of having to spend hundreds of pounds on a compact camera seem to have passed. There are still plenty of affordable options if you do want a dedicated camera, however, with Nikon's Coolpix S3100 proving a cheap and capable option for those on a tight budget. The Coolpix S3100 is available in a host of bright and vibrant colours, including yellow, silver, blue, pink, purple and black. It looks great, fits easily into pockets without leaving unsightly bulges, and is well made. One of the things we like the most about the Nikon Coolpix S3100 is the fact that it's easy to use. All the buttons carry out predictable functions, and the menus are a doddle to navigate. Even technophobes will be able to get on with this camera.

The bad

Image quality is decent from the Nikon Coolpix S3100, but it can be lacking in sharpness, and colours can also look a little underwhelming. Then again, at under £100, it's difficult to complain.

The bottom line

The Nikon Coolpix S3100 is a viable option if all you want is a cheap and cheerful compact camera. There are no stand-out features here, but it is affordable, produces reasonable images and is easy to use.

My main worry is the quality of the exterior is it good?
