Toshiba Camileo SX900

G-Rating

Rating of 5

The basics

This traditionally shaped camcorder from Toshiba crams in specs and skills you’d expect to find in much more expensive models. With a 9x optical zoom, 14 megapixel stills, the ability to shoot in Full 1080p HD, 1080i at 60fps and measuring 33x55x111mm, it’s a cut above some of the bargain options available right now.

The good

The design is what really makes the SX900 stand out. While vertical shooters are all the rage, this barrel-shaped model is much more assured for lengthy shooting periods, with the grip giving a more assured and steady feel to images. 60fps frame rate means pics are smooth and clear using the 1080i setting, while the 9x optical zoom helps bring tightness and detail to your handiwork.

The bad

The zoom button on the SX900 is its major failing. It’s not large enough and lacks the smoothness required to ensure zooming in and out doesn’t cause shaky shots. This is poor on Tosh’s part and does let the SX900 down quite badly. The plastic finish isn’t really worthy of a camcorder that has so many things to recommend it either. It feels cheap and nowhere near as sturdy as the Sony Bloggie Touch.

The bottom line

Camcorders built like the SX900 don’t normally elicit as much excitement as Flip-style models, but this has all the trappings of a top end model without the price tag. At £250, it delivers great video and is loaded up with enough features for even hardcore camcorder enthusiasts to get het up over.
