Sony HDR-CX6E

The basics

Full HD Flash memory AVC-HD camcorder fronted by a 10x optical zoom and backed by a 2.7-inch touch panel.

The good

Ever had so much fun you want to compress and bottle every last millisecond? Fire up this Sony’s Smooth Slow Rec mode and you can: high-speed shooting pumps your Memory Stick full of gorgeously fluid (although slightly blocky) slo-mo footage. Back at normal speed, visuals are crisper than a freshly forged fiver and twice as bright, the 5.1 surround sound is convincing and the touchscreen is more fun for your fingers than eating BBQ Beef Hula Hoops off them. The CX6 is tiny, light and almost silent to use. Best of all, it’s getting older now, so the price has shifted rapidly from ‘Lottery win’ to ‘Christmas bonus’ to ‘Screw it, it’s Friday.’

The bad

Sony’s NightShot low light shooting still has the best fake military green tint, but it’s pretty grainy and noisy. And 6MP still snaps aren’t as good as a real digital camera. But that’s it – this is one classy camcorder.

The bottom line

Buy one now before either it or the shop that’s selling it or your job has gone. Well worth seeking out over the new CX11, which has just a longer zoom, a few gimmicky features – and costs £200 more.
