The Kobo reader can be used with ebooks borrowed from public library web sites, such as my library in Bristol, UK. The Kindle doesn't support this service.
One other advantage I have found with Kobo: With a Kobo people can send you a specific ebook as a gift. (You can use its value for another ebook if you prefer when you receive the gift). With a Kindle you can only receive a general Amazon gift voucher in the UK currently.
