Hi Jon, I've recently done a LOT of research on these bridge cameras and agree with you somewhat in that the HX1 comes out on top. However, the reason I opted for a FZ38 is that Sony still insist on persevering Memory Sticks when the whole world is moving towards the uniformity of SD/SDHC cards. And with my Macbook Pro, there was no way I was going to ignore the built in card slot and have some ugly adapter hanging out the side! The FZ38 is also compatible with my Panasonic plasma - I can connect directly via mini HDMI or just drop the SDHC into the TV. I'm pretty sure the Sony can do something similar with Bravia sets. A lot of online reviews also state that the iA (auto) mode on the Lumix is inferior to the HX1 but you can get MUCH better quality images if you invest the time in the aperture, shutter & ISO settings on the FZ38 - which is where these cameras excel. Cheers, James
