Virtuix Omni VR: Incredible treadmill gaming accessory storms Kickstarter
Forget Kinect: the Virtuix Omni VR is the new high watermark when it comes to motion control in games. Simply don a pair of virtual reality goggles, jump onboard and you’ve got 360 degree movement on a treadmill, so you can literally walk around to explore levels – and it’s just smashed its goal on Kickstarter.
While we’ve seen a prototype of the 360 degree Omni VR treadmill – which works with the new Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles – before, the company behind it, Virtuix, is now giving you the chance to snag one of your very own. Head over to its Kickstarter page and you can pledge $429 (£280) or more to get your name on the list, with the first shipments expected in January 2014 – at the time of writing it had smashed its $150,000 (£97,600) goal by $300,000 (£195,000) with 47 days remaining
If you’ve got the space and the money for one, the Omni VR could just be the holy grail of gaming: immersive, and healthy. You can walk and run in any direction on the spot, working up a sweat in the process, and even jump – and with the Rift goggles on, your view moves with you. Imagine what you could do in a Call of Duty battle, or a new version of International Track & Field – who needs a gamepad when you’ve got this?
