Sony PS3 and PS Vita eBooks to take on Amazon Kindle?
Sony may literally be preparing a new chapter in its console strategy by launching an ebook service for PS3 and its new PS Vita handheld called ‘Storyteller’. The book service will deliver documents and books, with the aim of focussing specifically on children’s content to go head-to-head with the Amazon Kindle. The ebooks and documents will be part of a new section on Sony’s PlayStation Network store. That would see ebooks sit alongside downloadable games as part of the PS3 and PS Vita’s digital offerings.
Amazon Instant video streaming service lands on Xbox 360!
When might we be seeing these ebooks then? Rumour has it that Sony will be making a big thing about the new ‘Storyteller’ service at E3 2012, and that Sony isn’t the only ones planning the same.
Nintendo has also been tipped to get in on the act, using the Nintendo 3DS as an ebook reader to put a dent in current ebook readers such as the Amazon Kindle, Amazon Kindle Fire in the US and Apple’s iPad. Sony as always refuses to comment on the rumours. We’ll just have to wait till E3 2012 next week to find out.
An ebook service for PS3 and PS Vita wouldn’t be the first time reading material has landed on a Sony console. In 2009 Sony launched a digital comics service bringing Marvel comics starring Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men, and more to the PSP.
