Sleeker, slimmer PS3 with flip-up lid on the way?

A new PlayStation console has been spotted. Sadly, it’s not the PlayStation 4, but a slimmer, new PS3 with a flip-top style lid. It shows that despite rumours of new ‘next-generation’ consoles, Sony still believes there’s plenty of life in the PS3 yet.

Pictures of the new console appear on Brazilian technology site Tecnoblog, which reports that the images come from a Sony filing, adding credence to the rumour.

The model echoes a similar design Sony went for when it redesigned the PS2 Slim. That also had a flip-top lid, as opposed to the slot-loading disc tray of the current PS3 models.

The different units have been mentioned – a 250GB, 500GB, and what could be a 160GB model. We have no release date yet, however a PS3 Slim has been tipped for a Gamescom reveal next month. This could be it.

Sony is well known for predicting long life spans for its consoles. And as with the PSone and PS2, Sony predicted a 10-year lifespan for the PS3. In its sixth year, the PS3 still has some way to go before reaching that.

It means we can expect plenty more from the PS3, with more great games to arrive on the console in the coming year such as Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, which should help take the current generation into its seventh year, before the PS4 rumours really start kicking in.

There’s still plenty of life in the PS3 yet, it seems. Will you be picking up the new PS3 Slim? Let us know in the comments below.

I think that the PS3 current slim model is fine on its own. Sure they could make a slimmer version of that but I don't see the point. If they're trying to get more people to buy the PS3 then why don't they just add new features to the current one(s). The Ps3 SSlim will run on less power, increasing the likelihood of needing a special transformer block like the PS2 slim needed. It's difficult to implement one inside the actual unit itself, and Sony only just managed to do it with the Ps3 slim. There will most likely be overheating problems since even low it runs on low power, all of the processors, GPU and RAM will all be tightly packed. I have the Ps3 slim, if PS3 wants to sell more or release more models, why don't they just add features to the current one? In my opinion there is no need for a slimmer version of the slim version.

Can you put longer leads on any new consuls , that you are going to come out with. When I have replaced my old worn consuls, the leads are too short, bringing you too near the tv screen . Please add more NOT LESS ! ! !

They need to make a new console to use up all their spare PS3 parts they do not need, which indicates the PS4 will be completely new technology? I feel they should install the device which lets you play PS2 games again.

The Sony letter states a 16GB model rather than 160GB. This would probably allow it to compete far more aggressively with the 4GB Xbox 360. Also, with the grooves in the lid, it looks like a slide mechanism rather than a flip.

I think Sony should got back to the fat ps3, I had one for 2 years not trouble with it but traded it in! After a year of the slim version I have replace the laser and drive hope Sony fix this cheap box out and actually will be slim. As I have said toy friends if apple made game consoles I would be getting one!
