Sky+ iPad app is now a remote control, Zeebox skills incoming
The free Sky+ iPad app just got a major bump in functionality: starting today, it’s now a remote control to boss your Sky+ HD box around from the comfort of your sofa. But Sky’s plans don’t just stop there: read on to find out what else it’s got in the works.
While you’ve always been able to the Sky+ iPad app as a TV guide to see what’s on and even schedule recordings, today’s update to version 4.0 adds something even more useful in. You can now tap your iPad, provided it’s connected over Wi-Fi to the same network as your set top box, to change channels or pause, and swipe to rewind TV. No more using the clumpy plastic brick it came with all those years ago.
Video group test: Sky+HD vs Virgin Media Tivo
This alone is reason enough to download the Sky+ iPad app, but Sky has even more planned. Later this year, it’ll be integrating Zeebox, the second screen service it bought earlier this year, into the app, so you’ll get lots of info about the show you’re watching straight on your iPad, and even a live tweet stream.
That should make the iPad essential viewing equipment for anyone with a Sky box. The Sky+ iPad app is available now from the iTunes store, and will run on any iPad with iOS 5 installed.

You have to have the latest Sky EPG for this to work. This is still being rolled out so not all customers can use this service as yet.

Virgin have had the exact same functionality for some time now for their TiVo Box and for TiVo customers. Even though the app is not designed for UK TiVo boxes it still works very well. The PeanutPlus app does the exact same job and even displays a funky image of the TiVo Remote on your screen so you can press the buttons the same way as you would if you had the actual remote in hand. I've used this app for a few months now and it responds as quickly as the actual remote does. There is even a free app which is ad supported if you don't want to pay for it. Still not a ground breaking feature and it seems that Sky are still ripping off TiVo's idea's. When will Sky think of their own unique selling points?

With regard to the previous comment, I do have Sky and regurlly use the Sky+ HD App. I think these new features are great and look forward to them but was just pointing out that it will not be available to all the customer immediately. I think you should get off your high horse TBH.
