Rovio's Angry Birds follow-up to be called Amazing Alex

The wildly popular Angry Birds has been a massive success the world over, but for developer Rovio that success has created a bit of a dilemma: when you’ve already hit the jackpot once, how do you follow it up? Well we finally have the answer, and its name is Amazing Alex.

Doesn’t sound like a blockbuster in waiting? Well, Angry Birds probably didn’t either when it first surfaced, and look at how that turned out.

Angry Birds Space: 10 million downloads in 3 days

Amazing Alex certainly seems to have the right gameplay ingredients for another quirkily addictive gaming hit. It’s based on the iPad physics-based title Casey’s Contraption, which Rovio has snapped up the rights for, and will centre around the exploits of young Alex – a “curious young boy who likes to build things”, according to Rovio CEO Mikael Hed.

The idea is to place various components around the screen with the aim of triggering a sequence of events to achieve a certain goal, with each level presenting a slightly more difficult challenge than the one before.

“We are currently reworking the title to enhance it, and getting ready to re-introduce it in a true ‘expect the unexpected’ Rovio style launch to an even larger audience,” Rovio’s VP of franchise development Ville Heijari says.

That should happen towards the end of the summer, and we can’t wait to see it in action. In the meantime, Angry Birds continues to go from strength to strength, with the latest Angry Birds Space release having taken the franchise past one billion downloads in total.
