Rockstar bringing Grand Theft Auto 3 to iPhone & Android

October 22nd is the (gulp) tenth anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III and Rockstar Games is ‘celebrating’ the momentous date by, er, letting us buy things. There are several commemorative collectibles available and – most importantly, as far as we are concerned – iOS and Android versions of the game.

Mobile versions of the classic 3D crime’em up will be available in time for the New York Comic Con, which starts on October 14th. Due to the graphical demands of the game, which models a small city in 3D, only higher-end devices will be able to run it.

The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S will be able to cope, but no other iOS devices can take the pace. Android users have more options – the Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix and Samsung Galaxy S2 are the phones that can handle the processing load and tablet-wise the Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 are sufficiently well-specced.

Rockstar isn’t revealing much about how much of the original game will make it into the mobile version but did issue this statement.

“Grand Theft Auto III showed us the potential of open world games,” and added “It helped set the vision for the company, and we have been expanding on those possibilities with every game ever since”

If your phone doesn’t make the grade you can still join in the celebrations by heading over to Rockstar’s memorabilia store and pick up a pair of posters and a fully-articulated action figure of game protagonist, Claude.
