Official: iPhone 5 launches a week today!
We’d heard reports that an iPhone 5 launch event was scheduled for 12 September, but now it’s official. Apple’s sent out invites to to journalists for a press conference in California a week today, and they’ve got a mighty big clue hidden inside them.
The press conference is scheduled to take place at 6pm UK time on Wednesday 12 September at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California. It’s where Apple has unveiled many products before, and looks set to be a shoe-in for the iPhone 5 too. How do we know? Have a look at the invite yourself:

As you can see, the dropshadow cast by the number 12 is in the shape of a five, which all but confirms it. Apple likes to drop hints like this in its invites, like the super crispy iPad screen hinted at in the invite to its new iPad launch earlier this year.
We don’t know for sure what the iPhone 5 looks like yet, but rumours suggest it’ll pack a bigger 4-inch screen, as well as a smaller dock for charging and accessories. Tune in for all the details next week!

I cannot wait for the iPhone 5!!! I know it is ridiculous to be excited about this but apple do make the best products. It will go nicely with my new iPad and MacBook Pro (apple fan?)

Great, a smaller proprietary connector... Just what I always wanted :P

Make the dock smaller so that music docks or other items previously brought will not work meaning the customer has to buy all new items, well done apple well done! Rip off your loyal customers!

I've been waiting on the 5 for an age now. I have a 3GS and skipped on the 4S as I was hoping for a larger screen. The smaller dock doesn't bother me as I'd have to buy new stuff anyway. This is going to be sooooo much faster than my old 3GS :D

Looking forward to see what MS and Nokia pull out the bag today. Have had an iPhone, it was alright but it never set my pulse racing. The one thing that really annoys me (owning the new iPad) is that none of their mobile devices run java........ thats why I may change my allegiance when MS launch their new tablet

Maybe it's to say that Apple is teaming up with Channel 5?

I guess that is why Apple are trying to kill the Galaxy SIII, to remove the competition for their iPhone 5. They probably just copied a load of features from android phones and put them in the iPhone, they did with iOS5!

I not so sure about it being called iPhone 5, I think it's going to be "new iPhone". I think the shadow 5 relates to 5 new products ie:-new headphones, new iPhone,iPad mini, new iPod,and ios6. I maybe be wrong but you heard it here first..

Im a massive Apple fan with numerous products and very excited to see the iphone 5 but I have to say that when the 4s was released it left me disappointed they'd hash'd the product together and just released it and for me I wished I'd held back a year. Nevertheless the soon to be released iPhone 5 has turned me into an excited puppy with a full bladder !! It will be an interesting end of quarter for smartphones with major companies releasing their products. Next iPhone "killer" ??? Galaxy note 2 ??? Any views ??

I'm very excited for the new iPhone to see the new design features and most importantly the price! I'm sure the 4s will drop to a cheaper price? Anyway, I've heard its iPod touch shape with a very wide screen and is really really thin! Lets see what Apple has to pull out of the bag!!!!!!!!

It's going to be very, very good to make me regret buying my new One X (Which is on a £20.50/month contract, so the pricing will also have to be awesome. It's Apple, they won't be), which is made even harder by my distaste for Apple's actions in the courtroom (seriously, a monopoly on rectangles with round edges!?).

Of course having a new connector WILL not mean backwards compability issues. Apples a smart company, they would have thought about this, it will most likely come with a neat little convertor for anyone needing to use old generation products!

Yawn! to all these negative comments re. the smaller connector etc. Get a grip, how are you supposed they progress and evolve without innovation?! Just don't buy one if you don't like it...
