Nokia Asha Touch 309: New touchscreen phone debuts
The Nokia Asha Touch 309 and 308 have just been unveiled this morning. They’re not high end Windows Phones like Nokia’s lustworthy Lumia line, but instead slick little touchscreen critters with internet skills for a rock bottom price. Come meet them right here.
The Nokia Asha Touch 309 is a three-inch 400×240 resolution touchscreen phone with a nippy 800MHz processor, Wi-Fi and a two megapixel camera. It’s packing one SIM-card slot, while the 308 packs a second one for another phone line.
How to turn any phone into a smartphone
Both the Nokia Asha Touch 309 and Nokia Asha Touch 308 run S40, Nokia’s low power operating system it’s been using for a decade now – but don’t call them dumbphones. Both can connect you to smartphone using mates with instant message, get you need to go with Nokia Maps, and come preloaded with 40 top EA games to keep your thumbs occupied. There’s also a new version of Nokia’s XpressBrowser on board which even plays YouTube videos.
The Nokia Asha Touch 309 and 308 are set to go on sale later this year for around $99 – just £61. Would you go for this or a cheap Android smartphone? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Really looks like the interface from N900 (MeeGo Linux) but it makes sense since both Qt applications can run on both... Interesting! Wonder if Nokias bet on Windows will pay?

Of course it's a smartphone, it's got 5 rows of icons, and that apparently qualifies these days.

Looks a bit like the samsung s versions.

I am not a techno phobe, but have a samsung galaxy s. The reason I like it is because of the big screen, and for what I use it for, its pretty simple. This new nokia seems a pretty good idea to me. I do not play games but would use it for calls, texts and sat nav. So yes I for one would buy it, simply because of the price. It would also be handy to give as a gift because it is not carrying a high price ticket. So chances are, they will do well selling it.

I can see the attraction. It'd never work for most people as we've gotten used to the very fast current generation of phones with their HSDPA huge screens and bigger app stores... but for someone's first smartphone, or for those for whom the phone is still something to make calls with but it's handy to occasionally use maps or find train times, this seems perfect.

I probably wouldn't go for it. - I'd rather go with an Android phone if I'm honest; I can foresee issues with lag and instability on this phone.

Well, I'd probably give it a go, at that price. Apart from the original Motorola Brick I had always had Nokias, until I got the Samsung galaxy S, which has been a big disappointment. If it willo tether my nexus 7 it would be a real goer!

sounds like a fantastic idea. I seem to break phones alot so just get cheap little things but I do miss having mobile internet etc so this would be perfect!!

looks like a N8 in shape, similar size processor, shame about the 2 megapixel camera. Expandable memory? Not too bulky in the pocket and S40 works if a little slow by comparison. A useful spare or taken to gigs/holidays/axtivities.

This will definitely be popular here in South Africa amongst the masses who want the functionality of a smartphone with an affordable price tag. But if it doesn't come with a data package to contend with Blackberry it won't stand a chance!
