Nintendo Wii U: Lovefilm lands to take on Netflix movie streaming

The Nintendo Wii U just got another string to add to its bow: movie streaming from Amazon movie streaming service Lovefilm is coming soon. And if you’ve got an original Wii, we’ve got good news for you too: the same app is available to download right now!

If you’re a Lovefilm subscriber, you can download a Lovefilm app from the Wii Shop channel for free today: once you’re logged in you can start pigging out on all the films you can handle. Lovefilm says a release on Nintendo’s new HD console, the Wii U, will follow “shortly” – though with Netflix already available on it it may have its work cut out.

Though it also offers DVDs by posts, in the streaming space, Lovefilm competes directly with Netflix, the US giant, which typically offers better (HD) video quality for a higher price. But this may actually be less of an issue on the Wii, since it doesn’t even have an HD output – suddenly Lovefilm’s £4.99 pricetag looks much more tempting. Unless you have a Wi-Fi less Wii Mini, that is.

Will you be giving Lovefilm a go on your Nintendo Wii or Wii U? Let us know how you get on in the comments!

At last Nintendo. We use Lovefilms via the postal version and to have instant download is fantastic. Recently took out subscription for Netflix but will be cancelling as most films are dated and more geared up for watching past episodes of tv series which we have on BT Vision anyway. Saves buying a new smart tv :-)
