New Samsung Chromebook goes super cheap: So long, netbooks!

There’s a new Samsung Chromebook in town, and this little laptop is about to slash the price of computing on the go by a long way. Unlike previous models running Google’s cloud based operating system, this one costs just £229.

We’ve seen a £150 Android netbook before but the new Samsung Chromebook promises to be even better value. The 11.6-inch machine packs in everything you’d expect – a HD 1366×768 screen, a healthy 2GB of memory and even 16GB of storage (you get 100GB cloud storage on Google Drive too), and Wi-Fi.

The big difference that’s allowed Samsung to cut the cost is the processor though: the new Samsung Chromebook runs on a mobile processor like a smartphone or a tablet, which is low power and doesn’t need a fan so is dead quiet.

Previous Chromebooks have used Intel’s more power hungry processors and ending up costing more as a result, leaving Google’s pleasant Chrome OS without much traction. But a price that’s cheaper than even the crummiest netbook could change that: it’s up for pre-order over at Currys and PC World now.
