Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes: Incredible open world sequel headed to next gen consoles?
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. It’s sounds like a typo, but it’s not: it’s the name for a brand new game in the smash hit Metal Gear Solid stealth action game series. Konami revealed the title in a spectacular tech demo in Japan this week, and it looks nothing short of revolutionary: for the first time ever, Snake’s getting a great big sandbox world to play in, just like Grand Theft Auto.
Revealed as a brief tech demo at a Konami press conference celebrating 25 years of the Metal Gear series, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes saw Snake crawling through an open world layout, making sneak kills and hopping in a jeep to make a swift escape. But Konami says it’s a real game that’s in development right now.

What’s so exciting here is that Konami is promising a “game without game over” – so if Snake is spotted it’s by no means the end of the level. There’s always an escape route if you’re good enough: that implies that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes will adopt an open world game plan like Grand Theft Auto or Assassin’s Creed, rather than the restricted level layout of previous titles.
That and the graphics have been seriously souped up. Although no photos and images were allowed, journalists present reported that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes looked absolutely spectacular running on Konami’s lifelike new Fox engine.
Although the engine is designed to work on existing PCs, Xbox 360 and Sony PS3, it’s also been designed with next generation consoles in mind too. Could Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes be a launch game for the PlayStation 4? Details are few and far between for now, but we certainly hope so.
