Max Payne 3: Gang Wars multiplayer details revealed

Max Payne 3 sees the famous Bullet Time shooter return to consoles in March 2012 in a campaign that promises to deliver. It will be the first in the series to be made by Rockstar Games.

Now new details have been revealed of its Gang Wars multiplayer mode that promises to add an innovative twist to multiplayer gaming. So what will Max Payne 3 do that’s different?

Max Payne 3 is looking in great shape. We know this from our visit to Rockstar Games earlier this year. At the time multiplayer was not quite ready to be shown off. It is now, it seems. IGN reports that Max Payne 3 multiplayer will introduce a narrative twist to play, with scenarios players take part in.

These will range from being placed at the centre of a drug deal gone bad, as one team is forced to make off with bags of cash before dumping them at a safe location, to claiming territory from other players in matches reminiscent of the King of the Hill modes seen in other shooters.

Following rounds of matches are shaped by what occurs in the previous rounds so that play feels more story-based. Like in the single player campaign, each round will be connected by a voiceover narration. Objectives will vary from stage to stage.

And it sounds like players will be granted all sorts of special powers by collecting XP points from doing well. These points earn players abilities called ‘Bursts’ that give them temporary advantages over other players. One, called ‘Paranoia’ will force opposing teammates to see each other as enemies, resulting in friendly fire in your favour.

It all sounds very promising, if not a little like the multiplayer modes found in Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, which also had players collecting loot to score following heists. Let’s hope Max Payne 3 and Rockstar Games make a better stab at it.

Max Payne 3 will be launching in March 2012 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
