Marantz outs first AirPlay speaker system
The first third-party Apple AirPlay music streaming system
Hi-fi specialist Marantz has made it past the post with the first AirPlay certified music system not made by Apple itself – the Melody Media.
AirPlay is Apple’s wireless music streaming technology that lets you belt out your favourite playlist directly from iTunes over a compatible speaker setup. However, AirPlay compatibility is far from the Melody Media’s only strength.
Aside from its ability to hook up to your iPod, iPhone or iPad wirelessly, it also plays CDs and MP3 discs, and offers the full spectrum of FM, AM and DAB radio. It also comes with a USB connection for wired connection of iPods or other MP3 players, and the whole lot arrives at your ears courtesy of twin 2×60W stereo amplifiers.
But that’s not all. An ethernet port round the back lets you hook up your Melody Media to your home network for wired streaming via DLNA, and Napster integration means you can have all your favourite tunes on tap whenever you want them.
The Marantz Melody Media is available this month for £449, though the AirPlay firmware upgrade will only be available next month for an additional £40.
