Kinect 2 leak: Is this the first ever Xbox 720 screenshot?

Despite Microsoft’s protestations that it hasn’t accidentally said a new Xbox is is on the way, it’s almost certain there is one coming. According to an internal document that leaked out earlier this year, an Xbox 720 with a Kinect 2 motion sensor is in the works – and now an image that’s popped up online that apparently shows both up and running. Is this our first ever glimpse of what the Xbox 720 is capable of?

Twitter user @superdae doesn’t have many followers, but he caught the media’s attention when he slapped the above image onto the social network, with the teaser “Durango Kinect anyone?”

Durango is the reported codename of the next Xbox, and if this is legit (a source confirmed to The Verge that it is), this is a scan from the Kinect 2 attached to it. As you can see, this Kinect 2 prototype is capable of recognising two players with remarkable detail and depth: where the first could see hands, this can quite clearly make out individual fingers, even when held in front of the body.

That matches the details in the leaked Microsoft document, which promised an Xbox 720 with a Kinect 2 sensor that boasted stereo imaging, better voice recognition and four-player support, if your living room can handle it.

Just as intriguing: this might be the first ever screenshot from an Xbox 720. We can’t wait to see what the games using Kinect 2 will look like, if so. The first generation Kinect was a phenomenal success for Microsoft, becoming one of the fastest selling gadgets of all time. Will a Kinect 2 live up to expectations? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.
