HTC One X speed update puts it neck and neck with the Galaxy S3

We already knew the HTC One X Android smartphone was scheduled to get an update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the near future, but according to a new leak, it appears there’s another software upgrade coming before then – and it’s really fast. So fast, in fact, that it puts the One X on level pegging with the blazing Samsung Galaxy S3.

This weekend, the crafty hackers over at XDA Developers managed to get their hands on an unreleased version of the HTC One X’ software, codenamed Sense 4.1 – it’s currently running Sense 4.0, HTC’s modified skin on top of Android 4.0.

Despite the numbering, it’s not Jelly Bean, instead running on Android 4.04, but according to those who’ve tested it out already, it does promise a massive turbo boost. How fast are we talking? In one popular benchmarking app, Quadrant Standard, the HTC One X scored a massive 5,900.

To put that in perspective, that was compared to a typical score of around 5,100 before the update, and on a par with the Samsung Galaxy S3, the Usain Bolt of phones, which scores around 6,000. Last year’s top of the line Samsung Galaxy S2 meanwhile registers just 3,000 in the same test.

It’s not yet clear whether this update is the same one that HTC recently promised will fix the problem of the giant black menu bar at the bottom of many apps on the One X (or when it will be publicly released), but we wouldn’t be surprised to find if it was. Either way, HTC One X owners have a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

Are you an HTC One X owner? What do you make of the news? Let’s hear your thoughts in the comments.
