Gadget Show Live 2012: Parrot AR Drone 2.0 hands-on

At Gadget Show Live 2012 we played with a lot of cool stuff, including the Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0 – an awesome quadricopter that you control using your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. We’ve been raving about it for a while now, so at Gadget Show Live we grabbed the chance for a first test flight. It’s the most fun we’ve ever had with a smartphone. In three words: we love it!

Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0 explored!

As soon as we saw the Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0 on the show floor we just had to make a beeline for it. The fancy flying machine from Parrot is controlled using a Wi-Fi connection to hook up to an iOS or Android device, letting it steer in any direction, perform stunts, play augmented reality games and even record your flights from the viewpoint of the A.R. Drone itself using its built-in camera.

While we didn’t get to record our flight, the memory of our first airborne sojourn is something we won’t forget in a hurry. That’s because the Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0 is a blast. It’s so easy to pilot using your smartphone that anyone can do it.

On a smartphone you’re presented with two sets of controls. One circle on the left of the display adjusts height, while another on the right controls the backwards and forwards motion, adjusting the tilt of the A.R. Drone 2.0. Left and right motions are controlled by tilting your smartphone in the desired direction. Easy.

With worries of showing up our lack of flying skills in public, we approached with trepidation. Thankfully the Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0 can be mastered in a matter of minutes. Its ease of control and responsiveness is most impressive. There’s little chance of getting this one stuck up a tree. We did not even crash. Not once. Double tapping one of the on-screen buttons even lets you perform somersaults.

It’s fair to say we’re in love. The Parrot A.R. Drone 2.0 flies into shops on June 2012 for a cost of £279.99. If you’re at, or heading to The Gadget Show Live be sure to visit the Parrot stand to check it out.
