Gadget Digest: The Gadget Show World Tour begins, BlackBerry 10 out October, Star Wars arcade machine and more

In Gadget Digest we bring you a weekly handful of some of the best, coolest and sometimes quirky gadget stories from around the web. This week’s bunch is a varied selection of news, reviews and the very cool.

The Gadget Show World tour takes off!

Episode one of the very first Gadget Show World took off this week with a first leg tour of Japan, where our very own Jason and Polly tested camcorders and got to see real-life robots in action. If you missed it, you can watch the whole show here. 


Samsung overtakes Nokia as world’s biggest phone manufacturer

Samsung was this week declared the world’s biggest manufacturer of phones, overtaking Nokia with over 93 million handsets shipped compared to Nokia’s 83 million in the first quarter of 2012. Smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 have seen the Galaxy brand shoot up in the popularity stakes. We’re sure that figure will continue to rise on both fronts once the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Nokia Lumia 900 hit the shops. 


BlackBerry 10 devices set for October

Word got out this week that BlackBerry-maker RIM will launch its first BlackBerry 10 device at around mid-August. It will be a touchscreen only device. The first BlackBerry 10 device with a physical QWERTY keypad is thought to be planned for an early 2013 launch.



Cloud storage compared: Google Drive versus the rest

Google Drive is the latest cloud storage on the block, out to trump the likes of Dropbox and Microsot’s Skydrive and even get a jump on iCloud, but what does it offer the average gadget fan? Find out here. 


The cutest mini Star Wars arcade machine we’d love to own

An arcade fan known as Le Chuck has combined his love of gadgets with his lust for Star Wars to craft a a 12-inch fully-working Star Wars arcade cabinet. At just about the right size for the office desk, it’s the perfect distraction. See it in action here.
