Android-based Philips GoGear Connect 3 goes head-to-head with iPod Touch!
With Android currently taking over the smartphone world, Philips has pinned its hopes on the operating system doing the same in the PMP market, introducing the Android-powered GoGear Connect 3 at IFA.
In the hope that Android will revolutionise portable media players in the same way it has mobile phones, Philips launched the Philips GoGear Connect 3 at IFA in Germany yesterday. It features a 3.2-inch touchscreen, and comes with a choice of 8GB or 16GB variants. It seems the GoGear has Apple’s iPod Touch firmly in its sights.
As for the OS itself, Philips has installed the latest 2.3 Gingerbread version of Android, and you’ll be able to download apps or browse the web thanks to integrated Wi-Fi. You’ll be able to choose your own home screen shortcuts – just as you would on a mobile phone, and you’ll also be able to download thousands of apps and games from the Android market.
Whether this is enough to tempt people away from the mighty iPod remains to be seen, but it looks like a capable and usable effort. Prices for the GoGear Connect 3 have yet to be announced.

I don't think it will. A lot of the people who have Android phones only have them because they can't afford an iPhone, and since the iPod Touch probably a similar price to this, i don't see why anyone would choose this over an iPod Touch...

Dream on, most people buy Android because of the freedom to customize. Android is a true operating system, not a dead end street like ios. I had the money sands opportunity to buy Apple but choose not to.

@ cahill43, you obviously know NOTHING about WHY people buy android over iOS - the lack of restrictions on how you put your media on the device being one of many. Android is leading the way no matter what opinions you may have, the more wise gadget fan will always prefer more freedom to do things as they should with their gadgets. Apple is a BIG step backwards for many, until they "get with the program".

With only 16Gb this is no iPod Touch rival. As I am no youngster, I use my Touch mainly for e-mails and internet radio, in fact as a preferred alternative to a Blackberry when at home with Wifi. The music player is a minor consideration but I have still stored over 34Gb of music on the device and would put more on if the storage capacity was greater (I obviously have the 64Gb version). I am not committed to iPod but would only switch to a wifi device with at least 64Gb storage and capable of storing music of higher quality than mere MP3 files.
