My favourite mobile operating system is Android... It's the most flexible. I have a HTC Desire running the Gingerbread software from the Nexus S. The Desire was the best phone of 2010 and now its even more affordable than ever.. you can also upgrade it to gingerbread if you wish. I love mine and that's why i think the HTC Desire is the best smartphone.

well the iphone 4 is very capable phone, and yes there are other good smart phones out there. but the apple is the cream of the crop. the rest are just imitations. like the ipad all clones. good but not perfect

Where's the HTC Desire HD?or could you not have 2 HTC phones in the review-Personally I think the Android platform is far better than windows 7

I'm sorry but the way that this review/test is being done is just not realistic. Nobody is going to be surfing/texting on their phone in a car driving around a racetrack wildly, they will be at home, or at work, or at lunch, or on a bus, or a passenger in a normal sedately-driven car.

My phone wasn't on the show, but i think it deserves the top spot! The Samsung Galaxy S is a great phone and has great features. Texting is quick and easy with swype, great camera, really light, great functions, it's fantastic!

That was a completed unrealistic test, the blackberry has a touch screen as well, why not use that like on the other phones!! Should have had Ortis doing the test properly!!

I'm stunned the iPhone came in so high in the car test so far...even trying to text or type on the bus over speedbumps is infuriating! I loathe my iPhone and rue the day I didn't go android (but like most, am locked into TWO year contract..) can't wait to see the rest of your tests...

I think your smartphone test was unfair - the Torch has both a keyboard and a touch screen. I hate the keyboard personally but use the touch screen and find it really quick and easy to use. Why didn't polly do the test use the touch screen as well before deciding it wasn't up to the job?

I have owned the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and now the iPhone 4. I made the switch from BlackBerry to iPhone because the apps that iPhone offer are unrivalled. I wanted that ease of use, the fun experience, instead of BlackBerry's dull interface. I love my iPhone, however, there are certain things the BlackBerry clearly excels at. For example, the Bold's keyboard is the best physical keyboard on a smartphone. There is no contest in this area. So, when it comes to smartphones, it really comes to what you will need to do with it. For emailing and texting, BlackBerry wins hands down. However, for fun and games, iPhone is king.

Windows Phone 7. A completely different operating system with a beautifully realised interface. Beats all of the res hands down.

Seriously... what relevance does the time it takes to turn a phone on have to do with usability? I've only had to turn it on once in that last 2 months, and thats because it needed rebooting. Plus.. 3 of the phones you would have you can just copy and paste the information in.. not type it all out. The windows phone wouldn't let you do that. How about more relevant tests?

I think that of all phones motorola milestone 2 and motorola atrix or optimus 2x and 3d. they are probably better than a lot of the phones reviewed in my opinion.

i have used blackberry before and i have used it for 8 months but in the end i couldnt get use to the cramped keyboard that everytime you used you ended up clicking 2 keys or more. i have also used android (Samsung Galaxy S) and i will nevr have a windows phone they look nasty but i think the best phone i have ever had i think the iPhone is thee best for uderbility and i love it so much. My iPhone is the best phone i ever had. The iPhone 4 is a most have and i would highly recommend. iPhone 4 for the win.

The iphone 4 is 100% the top smart phone at the minute. the new 4.3 ios software is also going to keep making it better, one thing is th safari software getting updated which will make it load webpages twice as fast, with the retina screen and usability of the phone aswell you cant really go wrong. apple's a dominating market and whenever another company bring out a challenger to its products apple update their's! deffinatly my winner :)

The Blackberry Bold offered me fast loading, long battery life and much faster email use. The iPhone 4 was the opposite but offered a better internet browsing experience, no hand ache from typing and of course the all important iPod integration. So a mix of these two is what I'm after.

Well the iPhone 4 seems to be leading the vote, but the HTC is a superior phone by specification, and quickly catching up with the iPhone sales-wise. I'm curently looking to upgrade, and to be honest, I want the most gadget for my money - and the HTC wins. Why? ... with the iPhone you are locked into using software from the iStore (or whatever it's called now), whereas Android is far more open, so there are rapidly becoming more programmers for it ... therefore, for being more flexible and open, the HTC wins it for me hands down :)

Rubbish test... Only a fool would have an iphone and turn it off. It's common knowledge that most people keep it charged and simply locked on standby, in which case turning it on takes a speedy two seconds with a button press and finger swipe/passcode! In which case it would probably be the fastest to turn on, even if the other phones were already on. In fact, who has any smartphone and has it turned off all the time?!? A lack of thought here perhaps?

I agree with Otis! I love my blackberry, it is easy to use and personally for me the keyboard is great because I think touch phones are hard to use. I am also amazed the iPhone scored so well, because other elements are worse than Blackberrys! The battery life is shocking, and the touch screen is inaccurate and it annoys me because you can't use your nails to type!

I'll bet a hundred quid the Apple Sho...sorry...Gadget Show will somehow engineer it so the iPhone triumphs. I've owned the iPhone 4 (returned it after a few weeks due to sheer frustration) and now have a HTC Desire and I can say that no way is the iPhone the "king" of smart phones. Maybe it was once but no longer. If it does come out on top then that just confirms my long held belief that this show is in Apples pocket and that's me done with it.

In my opinion, Android will definitely be the most popular smartphone OS by the end of this year. It'll have more users than iOS, however this doesn't mean it is running on the best smartphone. Having said that, I personally feel that the best smart phone is yet to be released. The Motorola Atrix, from a geek's perspective, its to drool over. And just to annoy all you 'tribal' smartphone owners..... Apple products are for people who'd like to think they are "techy" and a bit of geek not to mention your grandma, hardly "smart" people. Definition of smart phone - "a mobile telephone with computer features that may enable it to interact with computerized systems, send e-mails, and access the web" Most people who own a smart phone don't even use its full potential because they simply don't understand it. They just download Angry Birds and check their e-mail. Maybe we should create a new definition for iPhone owners, tee hee hee, I'm just trying to wind up fan boys!!

for the 1 of the best user freindly, versitile, and genral alrounder smart phones it has 2 be the nokia n900. for simple and "pc like" web browsing, interactive touch screen, plus its ergonomic user freindly slide up keyboard its ideal for evrything from evryday use to bussines tasks. not forgeting the fact its a nokia, giving it unquestionable reliability/durabilty.

It has to be the HTC HD2. Great reception, allows creation, opening, editing of Office docs without Apple's tedious Micky mouse "workarounds". After watching the review of the smartphones I was somewhat dissapointed with the review you gave the Torch. I have been a blackberry owner for the last 3 years, progressing from a Curve to a Torch. I have previously owned various smart phones (nokias, sony ericson etc) and have the use of an Iphone4. Out of all the phones I have had/used the Torch is by far the best. With regards Poly's comments about the keypad on the Torch, had she simply closed the keypad and double tapped the screen it would have given her an on-screen keypad with what can only be described as a smart/predictive typing system. I do totally agree with what she said about the loading times for the browser etc, but I can forgive this for allowing multiple browser tabs to be open at the same time. I have had over 10 tabs open up to yet and havent noticed the speed slow down any. By using a WiFi connection it does get much better, but the browser rendering time itself is the issue, not the download times. I guess you tested the power on times from standby? The Torch has such a pathetic boot time from 'hard' off, around 2-3minutes, whereas from 'soft' off it will take a few seconds as commented. I have had initial problems with my touchscreen not responding to me, this was solved in the settings, it allows you to change the touch and tap times which makes it a much more responsive phone, however it still sometimes doesnt quite recognise where I am trying to tap and unfortunately there is no position calibration. The only gripes I have with this phone is the screen lock. It is from a fiddly button on the top, which when you place the phone in your pocket unlocks the phone, times I have been walking around and it has randomly started playing my music! This was solved with a £3 app that disables the button and puts a time delay to lock the phone and it can only be unlocked with a swipe (very similar to the Iphone4). The next gripe is that since changing to OS6 a lot of my apps (purchased for my Curve running OS4) now either dont run correctly, arent recognised correctly or report as uninstalled but work! The final gripe on the Torch is the app support, whilst compared to the Curve there are a lot more 'fun' apps available for the Torch it still doesnt have as much support for random app's as the Iphone's do. As the Torch stands now, without the keylock app etc I would rate it as an 7/10 to 8/10. If blackberry get their act together and implement this as a core part of the software (along with a screen calibration, not only for position, but for tap and swipe times etc) then I would probably give it an 8/10 to 9/10. Once the app support gets there then it will be a top notch phone.

P.S. The lead of the iPhone is due to more people owning one, most probably due to it's historical status as "the phone to have" ... but now other phones are catching up fast or even overtaking the iPhone in more ways than one. The only thing I can say about people that only go for the latest iPhone is - you're "iHooked" lol

I have been using Blackberry for a number of years now and I'm currently using the Torch 9800 but their is still some limitations in relation to the Blackberry OS system but these issues should be ironed out when Blackberry release QNX,OS7 later this year. Ottis didn't even meantion that the Blackberry Torch has a touch screen as well as a full qwerty keypad which as far as I'm concerned puts it ahead of other smartphones. I also don't like the fact that you can't upgrade the OS on the iphone hence the reason apple release the same phone every year with a new OS and then bump up the price which is a rip off, when Blackberry release their updated on the desk top manager and they're FREE

Most of my friends have i phones and most of them wish they had not taken out the contract and can't wait for their renewal date. The company that I work for have approx 57000 employees and has gone over to blackberries. If you are looking for a non frill phone that does what it says on the box then it has to be a blackberry. By the way three years ago when I went to upgrade with o2 there was a four month waiting list for i phones, I was not prepared to wait and the o2 sales person said that must of them had blackberries! Funny for a company that was meant to be prompting the i phone. I will never go back!.

Where's the HTC Desire HD?!?!?! I'm just watching the camera section of the show, a comment's been made about the iPhone 4 having 5mp and touch focus which the HTC is lacking - yet the Desire HD has an 8mp camera and touch focusing! You've clearly not used the best HTC available which is really bad, to say an iPhone 4 is better is shocking; I got shot of my iPhone to get a Desire HD. I found the camera better, the OS easier to get on with, iTunes and the darn sync's will never be missed and the battery can be changed! Meaning I don't have to worry about being out all day and my phone dying. The show hasn't finished yet but I'm willing to bet the iPhone 4 will be crowned top, probably because you didn't include the Desire HD in your lineup. A fix if ever there's been one.

everyone who regularly watches the show will tell you from the credits opening the show that the iPhone will win, infact, anyone in the media/publishing environment will tel you so too for the integration, but the reality is that its not such a smart phone, more a Simple phone! friends Grandparents have iphones!! the test is rubbish, waste if time, with a few of the newer smart phones missed out, nokia, Orange sanfransisco, etc. and as has been mentioned a few times already, No mention of the torch's touch screen! come on iGadget show! atleast use the relevant tests, may as well used plug in qwerty keyboards for the others to make them equal!! to me the iphone's video wasnt as good as the others, if you want a phone as a communication device then get a blackberry, Best email platform Ever, and messaging, cant beat it, you just need to know its a phone with Media capabilities, rather than the iPhone which is a Media player with phone abilities! the other Major downside to the iphones are the sold on one OS, the blackberry's and andriods and windows phones are all updateable free through desktop software! most of this doesnt matter as the iPhone has the most apps therefor it will win! (if you'r an appleist then its the apps that matter! you may have 200,000, against blackberry's 20.000 and andriods etc. but the rest of us dont have all the Tripe apps!!!) try a Fair unbiased test of All the Phones available and using an empty laptop on basic software for installing files etc. and having to use New accounts rather than existing itunes etc. Make it Completely fair! if you can stop with the apple bias then the gadget show Will be the best there is!!

To be quite honest I could see the Iphone winning this challenge for the simple fact that the Gadget Show has an automatic bias towards anything done by Apple. I'm sorry if I have to put it this way but the fact that in the final challenge that A: the Iphone didn't translate the Spanish message as well as the Nexus S did meaning the Nexus S wins here B: the Iphone could only work with HP printer whilst the Nexus S could work with any printer, another win to it. C: the transport provide was well and truly biased so Polly no matter what would of lost even if the phone had not died as she was travelling so slowly. D: the Iphone steered Jon wrong not once but twice whilst the Nexus S was flawless without the battery dying E: Why did Polly have to turn round and go back, couldn't she of just navigated without the phone which I have seen done mulitple times on the show when a gadget has failed. I'm hazarding a guess here but maybe the Nexus S was not charged as much as the Iphone meaning less battery life. In general, the merits show means that the king of the smartphone should and is the Nexus S and Android.

tWrong decision completely, you didn't fully charge/use the correct battery saving techniques I have a desire hd and even though the battery isn't great I manage to get through a day using power saving apps and widgets. the only two advantages of the iPhone are the amount of apps and the design. Hi tried a Blackberry, and a Sony Ericsson with watch to match, but the IPhone 4 is not in the same league. Also the start up test was odd as my phone is never switched completely off so it starts up instant. only thing to improve apart from IPhone 5 is get my MB100 watch to work with my IPhone 4. Top Show.

Ridiculous. Iphone the best? Third rate camera. Second rate satnav. Fragile. Poor connectivity. Very pretty tho. Looking at getting a new smart phone soon. Android maybe, not sure about the build quality of those around at the moment. Blackberry, great if most of your mates are on BBM. HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy S or a N8 (love the camera & HDMI output) for me. Definitely not an Iphone.

Not got one yet. That's why this weeks ep interested me. I've got to say, by the end of the test I was utterly confused by the declaration that the iphone won. The google one translated the Spanish much more accurately. It was equal in the finding clothes. The navigation actually worked. The only reason it won the race was because she took time to pick her dress. And she still could well have won in the horse and cart weren't it for the battery. For all we know she could have used the google phone more than he did the iphone that day. So it may not be that they generally have lower battery life. At least we don't know it from watching that test. Seems to me they did all the testing then washed over the fact that the google phone did best for most of that final round. Plus conclusions seem to be made based on one off occurrences. No repetition to make sure one consistently performed better than the other and it was not just lucky that one time. And of course the whole concept of knocking one thing out each round makes no sense. I have no interest in the photo stuff but because the test knocked the HTC out I have no idea if that would be the one to win if photo ability were to be ignored. I've learned today that this show should not be used to decide on what product to buy. I'll just look at it as light entertainment and take all the tests with a huge pinch of salt and bear in mind they blindly love apple.

The Gadget Show just seem to be a bunch of naive iPhone fans, who don't see all of the faults that the iPhone has, such as being able to do anything productive. The software is awful because it is made by Apple, who to be ohnest, can't write any decent software, one of the reasons most people use Windows or Linux. And Windows Phone 7 was only released last November, so its hardly had anytime to develop. It really annoys me when people just blindly state that iPhone is the best, with out understanding any of the technical details, security floors, freedom and capability for developers, etc. Either come up with a decent answer why iPhone is best (good luck with that), or just stop going on about it.

wtf? iphone was horrible the whole way through the test, the only way it won was when the nexus "died" and at least try to include some other phones. also why did the nexus go behind in the race because it took longer for her to choose a dress? not exactly fair... even an orange san fransisco would have beaten the iphone if it were a proper test and it is a fraction of the price...... i am disappointed.... again....

I use the Nexus S, which is made by Samsung and is very similar to the Galaxy S. The Nexus has a very nicely curved screen which reduces reflections. The phone is always unlocked and has no operator software and the latest Android software. As such it is completely configurable and can be moulded to suit anyone's needs. Moreover it is fast and has Flash. The best mobile too because it is light and doesn't weigh too much, at the same time it is not flimsy. The screen is almost as good as the iPhone. Thanks to Google it syncs great with my iPad which I am using right now to type this.

I found the challenge completed unrealistic, unfair and bias towards the iphone. The gadget show, always seems to find a way to have the iphone top of its list every year. So i was'nt suprised that it won yet again. There are other android phones on the market that would easily beat the iphone if given a fair chance by the show (e.g. samsung s, htc desire, making sure that the devices have an uptodate android os). Also, why did Polly take time to choose a dress against John who only has to dress in a diner jacket. This allowed John to get to the final stage first and choose the quicker mode of transport. And why was'nt a reason given for the android phone shutting down. If it was because of battery use, as any smartphone owner knows, you don;t have everything enabled at the same time, to conserve battery life. To do all the tasks would not of drained the battery of a fully charged smartphone. I have a HTC wildfire, and i could of completed all the tasks with a budget smartphone.

I have the Sony Ericsson Satio. I know this phone is a couple of years old now but it's brilliant i love my phone and would consider getting another one when this has worn out. I have had it for just over a year. Texting is great the touch screen keyboard has large keys especially if you use the phone in landscape mode and it has a good response to touch. I mainly use the wifi connection to conect to the internet but i have never had a problem with either 3G or wifi. It has a very large capcity for storing text messages and contacts. I am able to download music either from the web or a cd or even trasport them from itunes into the Sony Ericsson software, the other great thing is that i can set downloaded music as my ringtones, alarm tones and text message tones. Making phone calls is really easy too whether u want to type in the phone number, go from your address book or dail a previously dialed number. And finally to the camera. Well what can i say but it is amazing. I am absolutely amazed at the camera. 12 mega pixels with a great zoom. From taking pictures of my cat and nintendo ds screens to taking pictures at music festivals with large stages the camera i can not fault at all. The gadget show did review this phone and it came top of all the camera phones. There were however a few glitches when it first came out, these have now been ironed out. This is definately my number 1 smartphone.

As usual another show that's extremely bias to the iPhone, really disappointing. Where was the Desire HD?!?!?! In the camera section of the show the iPhone was favoured over the HTC because it has a 5mp camera and touch focusing where as the HD7 had 5mp and a poor auto-focus; but the Desire HD has an 8mp camera and touch focus - it'll also record in 720p! There are so many points that were missed out, Droids can run Flash, iPhones to my knowledge can't, HTC's have removable batteries meaning you can go out all day and take a spare rather than worry about charging equipment, the list goes on and on. Read any online comparison and they'll tell you that the Desire HD is the better phone, this show surely should have known this - they've gone out of there way to shield the iPhone for far too long. Really disappointing, yet somehow quite predictable - I predicted the winner as soon as I saw the line up. REMATCH ON NEXT SHOW PLEASE, THIS TIME INCLUDING THE REAL FRONT RUNNER IN THE SMART PHONE MARKET!

I find it odd that a 'phone' review didn't test the phone features... Many smart phone have some fantastic features but are not very accomplished phones - bad signal strength in areas, on networks, where a basic Nokia has a full signal; battery life poor; clarity. It might not make such good viewing but surely the primary function was completely missed.

As a business user I have to look at more than just the phone; national and international network coverage and costs are the defining factors in what I choose. I like the iPhone 4 however; its frustrating network tie-ins rule it out instantly. Network coverage outside of the UK is costly and at times limited. For me it has to be the HTC desire HD on T Mobile.

The HTC Desire HD is by far the best smartphone. It does everything really fast, brilliant camera, video, apps, the lot.The iphone 4 is easily beaten on every spec by the desire hd.But the Gadget show cant pick a product that will beat any apple product, they are probally on kick backs.I think the galaxy and desire hd are the two best smartphones by miles. The battery on the desire hd is the only downsidebut you cant have a brilliant phone doing everything it does without that.Maybe they will brill out a more powerfull battery later to buy, something that can't happen on apple products. The Gadget show has become like top gear - Stupid test, just testing the most expensive gadgets that money can buy but most ORDINARY people can't. Get a real life. HTC DESIRE HD RULES.

Lets talk about the N8, not mentioned in this review, but can it be a match for the mighty iphone 4. Can the N8 12 MP Carl Zeiss HD camera with xenon flash (like a proper camera) stand up to to the iphone 4 5 MP camera with LED flash, can the N8 sat nav (which has won awards im led to believe) compare with iphone 4 google maps, anything you can get on iphone app store you can pretty much get on ovi store i think but maybe im wrong, the user interface i find to be just as easy to use as the iphone but again that might just be me, but wait the iphone 4 gave birth to the video call, we have all seen the adverts so no other phone before it has been capable of this task or has it? as a matter of fact i carnt find any area that the iphone 4 is way above the N8 and am struggling to figure out why it was not put up against the other handsets in this review maybe because the show is not giving one away or just because they have got some apple fanboys in the crew and they knew that the N8 is a serious contender to take the iphone's crown and we carnt upset the apple crew. Dont get me wrong the iphone 4 is a more than capable smartphone but no match for the N8, it wasnt good enough to be in this review apparently but it was good enough to be johns phone for receiving his texts in the video maybe that says it all.

Let's forget about the unfair tests on the show: if you leave the video mode in vga then of course it's not 720p, turn the settings up then you'll get hd like the iP. Also yes a motorcycle is quicker than a horse, well done. We all know that phones make phone calls (unless you hold the iPhone in the wrong way and you get no signal), but the most common smartphone use is the internet. And in one word why the iPhone doesn't even come close to the others - Java. Without it, it's like watching tv in black and white, sound muted and with the contrast turned high.

So the iPhone won because you didn't pick market leaders for the other operating systems, and it took longer to pick a dress than Jon did with his suit. Seems like a fair test to me... And for those questioning the lack of a Nokia phone, Nokia themselves recently abandoned its own platforms and APIs and are going to make devices using WP7. Symbian is so much better than the other operating systems in some aspects, but in more important parts, it was found to be was severely lacking and they decided it couldn't be fixed in time to be competitive in the current smartphone market. Why would The Apple Show review a Symbian phone that even Nokia wouldn't consider buying?

I have to say Gadget Show, being a long term fan myself i'm starting to get really tired of your seemingly unbreakable loyalty towards Apple products. All of your tests involving them are geared towards them being the product that wins. Of course we all know the iPhone/Pad are capable machines but are they really the best? In 2 of the 4 tests last night the Nexus won, it was quickest in the car and had the best stills camera. The iPhone proved it had the best video camera but the final test was a cop out. Making it about apps proves nothing about the phone itself. Not to mention that it looked anyway as if the Nexus was winning (even with the lack of equality given in the vehicle choice) before it (was) switched off - i can't belive that if your phone turns off when you're on your way somewhere that you would then just give up and go home, this also doesn't prove that the iPhone was better. I think that the whole elimination part of the test was because you knew the iPhone would only have won the apps challenge had all 4 phones been tested in all challenges, again gearing the result towards the iPhone. I wish for once you would acknowlege that the iPhone although probably in the top 5 smartphones just isn't the best (especially when considering the sort of contracts available for all the phones)

I have to say, that the Nexus S, HAS THE TOUCH TO FOCUS option that you said the Iphone 4 has, but it isn't on the stock rom, in fact I have a REALLY old HTC Hero (gsm) until my contract runs out AND THAT HAS TOUCH TO FOCUS! So if you are a techy person who can handle upgrading the firmware yourself you can get the latest features on your phone. Also the "dedicated" apps on the Apple Market, I agree are very good, but that doesn't mean Android doesn't have "dedicated" apps its just that unlike with apple and app can be replaced. for example I'd class Gmail and Google Maps as a dedicated app, but you can easily use co-pilot instead of maps and many other email handling apps can replace Gmail.

Why does this show, when doing comparisons between phones, continually engineer tests so that the iPhone wins?? I really would like to know this and I am directly asking this question to whoever monitors these comments pages. And judging by other comments here I clearly am not the only one who thinks this. To claim the iPhone is the “king” of the smart phones is ludicrous unless you have some vested interest in making it so. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to make out the iPhone is terrible and to do so would make me just as bad as the Gadget Show (albeit in reverse). And a few years ago the iPhone probably was the best smart phone on the market. But come on. As many people have quite correctly claimed the Desire or Galaxy S, the two leading Android phones, truly hold this title and out class the iPhone at every turn. Curiously however they are omitted from this test almost as if to give the iPhone a head start. How can you possibly say a phone which has no Bluetooth connectivity (in the truest sense), does not support Flash, has very limited multitasking, has an unnecessarily complex way of updating and downloading through the woeful iTunes and has well known signal issues as the best smart phone? And the App store argument is ridiculous. All the major apps are also available on Android and for the most part for free. When you’re talking about hundreds of thousands of apps versus millions the figures become meaningless as there are more apps on either store than you’ll ever use. The iPhone is for those with little to no understanding of technology and simply want it for the perceived status it provides. It’s a fashion accessory and nothing much more. As the Gadget Show presents itself as a consumer advice show I really do question their impartiality as there is clearly a conflict of interest here. The Gadget Show clearly have some kind of love affair with all things Apple (especially the iPhone) and I simply do not trust their advice anymore and a lot of questions have been raised on these comments pages that I would really like to see addressed on the show (which we all know will never happen). You’re fast losing credibility and with that will go your viewership!

Didn't even review the HTC Desire HD which is a poor do as it comes out on top in everything apart from the amount of apps (although the selection is still excellent). Apple products are fine if you don't really know much about technology and want to be severely restricted on how you use it. I think few will dispute that the iPhone 4 has the sharpest screen, but the number of comments on here bigging up the Samsung Galaxy S shows it warrants some attention. I have used the HTC HD7 and was actually very impressed (although I'm usually in the anti-Microsoft camp!) but the owner said it was 'glitchy.' I use a Sony Ericsson X10 which was amazing when I got it. Now I'm disappointed and want to upgrade. That said, I will definitely be sticking with Android and, having used a Galaxy S, that's high on the list. So too is the Xperia Arc. I'm a little surprised there was no representation from Palm or Symbian in there, but I guess the test wanted to concentrate on the top players. * iPhone - Excellent, but still too restricted. Only really any good after it's been rooted. * Windows - Much better since WP7, but still a long way to go. * Blackberry - BBM top selling point for me, but that's just not enough. * Android - Fully usable for most users out of the box. Now settling into a 6-monthly release cycle and maturing nicely. Incredible new features emerging all the time and new devices constantly coming out to make use of them. Definitely a winner for me. My choice - Samsung Galaxy S. Ed.

Just a little confused by your ultimate test of smartphones when you were missing one of the major platforms. I appreciate Symbian isn't the 'belle' of the ball but there are quite few handsets out there. I would have thought the N8 or the E7 should at least have been allowed to represent the Nokia-Symbian offering. I know that we're looking towards the end of the Symbian platform but that's at least a year away and there are still a bunch of people who might have been interested to see how symbian 3 stacked up in your test. A slightly more balanced in approach would be appreciated in future Aside from that...love the show as always!

And hence did not get ridiculously handicapped with a horse and cart. That does not adds up to the iPhone being the 'undisputed' king of smartphones. I'm new to the Blackberry Torch, but so far it out performs on boot-up and has the best of both worlds throughout. Entry by keyboard or touch screen keyboard (not mentioned on test), touch screen or trackpad navigation and with easy sync to outlook etc, makes it a serious business tool with plenty of app entertainment.

I can not believe you omitted the Nokia N8from the challenge!! It would have trounced the other phones, especially in the pictures, video and navigation challenges. I like many others have noticed a certain bias from your show towards Apple and their I-stuff, but to ignore the N8 from this challenge so the I-phone would win is just shocking!! I did notice that Jon's phone is an N8 (the one he received the texts on in the first challenge) What does this tell us about the presenters choice of phones? Shame on you Gadget show!!

I cant Believe that the Nokia N8 was not tested up against these contendors. This was I believe a test of the phone itself, and although some people think that Symbian OS is not so good and I too have found the odd problem, the system has now become much smoother and problem free. This is the only thing that the other reviews have against it! The hardware,Camera, sound,Satnav and and apps from the OVI store are all as good as if not better then the Iphone. The Camera and Video recording detail alone beat the Iphone and I think to date all other smartphones. Lets be fair can you now test this against these contenders. One of the tests you did featured photo taking and video quality, and im sure it would have come top here. Also the photo/video editing software built on the phone would have hit the highs .

i think the car test was not 100% right because, three of the phones you used, you used the touch screen and on the blackberry you used the keypad. so i think if it was done again with using only the touch screen we can see the results. and also different phones have different sensitivity on it all phones should be set to the same sensitivity for a equal test. well thats my opinion.

I would just like to champion the Blackberry Torch as a relatively new comer the blackberrys and hjaving owned iphones android phone in the past I have to say the blackberry is by far the better handset. There might be millions of apps for both the other brands 90% of the are useless the, iphone might have greast screen resoulution but trying to sell it because you can "face time" on it is hardley cutting edge my old SE K800i could do tha 5 years ago. One last thing in the show Polly had nice long nails when she was trying to type on the Blackberry's keypad which is a bit unfair on the all the other touch screen devices. Anyway rant over love the show and thanks

I guess the Nokia N8 was not included in this silly challenge as it would have beaten the I Phone and gadget show are so biased towards Apple especially iPhone. There is no piont to do a test for best smartphone unless you include all the latest smartphones. First test lets see how quick they start up, who cares as most people never switch off anyway, second test how quick can you find out soem info using the web, depends on what phone system you are used to. Comeon Gadget show the concept of challenges is boring we do not care who wins we want to see good product testing. You have crowned the iphone king of smartphones, i crown the smartphone test the most stupid waste of time and money to date on the gadget show.

That last "test" was completely bogus. The iPhone4 did not perform as well as the Nexus & it was let down by 2 things. Polly choosing a dress and then Polly being made to plod around the streets in a flippin' horse drawn cart. You can't let that stand. Do the test again and give Polly & Jon equal transport/wardrobe choices. If that had been the case the Polly would have won by dint of the Nexus taking her straight to the location. She wouldn't have had to choose clothes either. God! Lately you lot are turning into an ad campaign for Apple products. Fanbois.

Love the HTC Desire. Cheap, fast, does everything I need. If it has one flaw, it's that the internal memory is woefully small. Once you've updated all the Google apps and Adobe Flash, you've got barely any room for non-SD apps at all. Big mistake in forward planning, HTC!

I own both the top phones that is IPhone 4 and Nexus S. Both are good phones. My wife uses the IPhone 4 and she loves it. Even I thought that the user experience on IPhone 4 is the best untill I bought the Nexus S. Coming to the competition on the episode the Nexus S did better than the IPhone(or for that matter all the 4) in the first two challenges and It almost won the third one as well untill the battery died. But if you carefully the IPhone to Jon through a wrong route and to the incorrect end of the Hall which is a fundamental error by the sat nav. There definitely seems to be some foul play. According to me the Nexus S handles a lot functions with ease.

What was that final test??? The android was top in each of the apps and the result only came in as the iPhone winning due to the fact that you pitched a pair of high heels against a pair of flat shoes and then a motorbike against a horse. The result had nothing to do with the phones at all. Please don't go the way of T3 and other magazines/shows where you worship Apple against all others. Apple are good but need to lighten up a bit.

The question people should be asking when buying a new phone is not how good the current phone is, but choosing an OS and sticking with it. Then you will keep all your paid for apps on your PC when you upgrade you phone. So all makes of OS are different. if you are a businessman or for some reason a spotty trendy teenager who likes spending far too much on a few apps then balckberry! A geek or on a budget then Android. If you hate yourself and like gambling then windows! If you want the OS that has so many apps and always works on the best made phones then Apple. simple.

With the android phones you have not picked the best one out there. There is the Galaxy S or the amazing HTC Desire HD. Either of these phones is superiour to the android phone that you tested. Personally blackberry does not offer what the other phones that were test could, because with an apple it's like a portable gaming device, small laptop and has a good camera in the right hands. Even though blackberry has a good keyboard some may find it hard to use, and as well people could find it hard to use a touch screen, i tried even before i had a blackberry and because i have slightly larger finger tips it took me ages to type anything! I think with phones it is definitely what that individual is comfertable with and used! You cannot tell someone weather they will like the phone or be able to use it!

I'm sorry but sion you have blatently never used android as you make out as you have no idea what your talking about. you think that because android is an open source os this leaves you vulnerable to attacks? I've never heard anything so ridiculous. I program android and know how the os works in great detail. being open source means that anyone can take the source and compile it to run on whatever you like without any fees etc as its available to everyone. so samsung for instance take the basic os from google play around with it to do what they want it to do and then release it on a device. it has to go through vigorous testing also first. the only way you would get attacked is downloading apps not through the actual android market but then again if your iphone is jail broken and you downloaded apps not off the app store then your under the danger threat so your talking nonsense

The nexus wins by far, I went from a blackberry to the nexus and theres no regret in that choice. I can do everything on my phone that I would have had to pay extra for on the blackberry like the internet. The iphone just has so many problems such as the autocorrect or not being able to have the spell check on whilst having auto correct off. My partner has a desire hd and wishes he had waited until the nexus was released to upgrade. Overall android is a far superior system and works as it should. I'm not here knocking Apple or their nice tech, but I think the show's producers will have to really try to answer/apologise to their viewers about this worrying state of the show's biased this season. I think the people leaving the angry and dismayed comments should maybe take the next step and complain and ask to investigate the bias on the show either with Channel 5 or The Broadcasting Standards/Complaints Commision. To answer the initial question I have owned Apple, Nokia, & Android phones and for me (at the mo') it's the Galaxy S.... no competition.

Nokia N8. Multi-tasking? Nokia has had it perfected for years. Next generation input? Welcome to Swype. High resolution camera with proper xenon flash? Again, Hello Nokia. The N8 is easily the most advanced hardware on the market today. Maybe history can teach us a thing here, the best isn't necessarily what the public will latch on to, because the best concentrates on what it does, not on how it markets itself. See Novell, finally gone, used to be the market leader until the Microsoft marketing machine convinced business leaders to get Windows Server. See Microsoft, now getting anxious, as old rival Apple came up with a storming product, so easy to use, so cleanly marketed, so much better than Microsofts old tablet edition (2002?2003), and promptly took the market. See Apple getting worried now Android (linux clone) allows anyone else to develop cheaply and quickly (phones, tables, DVRs, webcams, etc etc). So, best smartphone? Do you want best hardware (Nokia) or best user experience (Apple) ? Or maybe best of both worlds (Android with a few customisations)? Or have we simply not see the best yet?!!

Nokia N8 - simple, beats all other phones when it really matters. Gorilla Glass - compared to heaps of broken screens, or people have to use a case around their phone to protect it, why make a slim phone when it needs to be put in a bomb shelter incase it breaks? Maps - on the phone, usable in any situation, i.e. travelling (no need to have a data plan) free voice navigation really great! Camera - Still best camera on a phone at 12mp with xeon flash, do wish it had an led for night films but xeon is awesome for photos USB on the go - plug anything in and it works, a keyboard, mouse, memory stick HDMI - awesome connect it straight to a tv, and it plays everything ive thrown at it. Swype - best way to input text on a touch screen if you have fat fingers like me Sound quality and inputs - great speaks, great digital mic, ofcourse has fm radio/ and fm out to play music over the car stereo, or calls etc Music copy straight to the phone, no need for extra pc software. Games - heaps of free games - angry birds/ need for speed etc Battery - out lasts most phones easily and really great screen which has the time displayed on it all the time! price - get it from hongkong for GBP255 unlocked which is a lot cheaper then anything else out at the moment! Apps - heaps of apps, and at the moment you still have to get opera mini/mobile as nokia as it didnt come with a great one, but that said opera mini is awesome for verry quick downloads of webpages. similar apps as on other mobile platforms. No hype about it works standalone, if you dont want a massive data plan and the the best features on a phone, also again the camera is really that good, nothing has come close, with the largest sensor (hence the bump) made to last, really strong.

This poll is weird. It is asking you for the best smartphone in the world yet it doesn't include the phone in the poll the Galaxy S 2 which Mr Jon Bentley rated the best phone in the world. Also its more of a popularity contest NOT which is the best because 98% of the people voting will not have proper knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of each phone. In my experience of using both iPhone and Android I personally find the android operating system easier to use. It is more flexible to your needs and more simplistic. iPhone only will be the popular phone in this poll because iPhone have the bigger fan base. Another point in which I prefer android is the range of the products is that, you can get a top of the range phone with android, or a low range version with android depending on your needs. iPhone basically says you can have this phone. and this price. but you can choose memory size. That's another point, you can adjust most android phones memory size to your needs. If you don't need much space you can use the internal memory or if you want a lot you can expand it. Also android can be put into different products for different functionalities, for example it is being developed into things like light switches and doorbells. I wouldn't be surprised if you could control your whole house from an Android phone. However the iPhone app store has a wider range and the advertising technique used by apple is very clever. The design of the iPhone is very stylish. Overall though I personally think that Android and iPhone are both very good operating systems but I prefer using the android operating system.

I love the HD7 and OS updates are making it better all the time. Windows Phone 7 has a lovely interface, it's much cleaner than iOS to look at and in terms of software the MS marketplace is rapidly expanding with a good selection of free software. Although never having been a fan of Apple due to their business practices may taint my view somewhat, I actually have to support both their desktop and mobile solutions for work... I have to say that the more I use their devices the more they infuriate me. Sure they are easy to use if you want to do something basic but dig a little deeper and you find critical functionality missing and/or blocked by a manufacturer who "knows what's best for you". I would never recommend an Apple product to anyone and when people approach me for recommendations I am always happy to point them in the direction of both better and cheaper alternatives.

Love my HTC Sensation with HTC Sense 3.0 and Android Gingerbread. HTC sense just links all your social networks and contacts together. I am using an app that mimics the music player for WP7 as I find it one of the best looking music players out there as it flows so smoothly. Love my HTC Sensation but cant understand why SGS2 not shown in contest as that is a fast and powerful android phone. Android is the future in regards to operating system due to its openess. Apple are now having to take legal action against other operating systems to hold them back. Other phone makers are making 4G compatible phones, but apple do not want anyone releasing them before it releases theirs. Probably so it can say we invented 4G. As previously stated the gadget show has always been pro iphone even when another product is better than it. No matter what the tests show they will always be pro apple.

i have recently purchased a samsung galaxy note, which is like a galaxy S2 on steroids :-) its a fantastic phone 1.4ghz dual core 1gb of ram with an amazing 5.3" screen which makes playing games watching youtube videos and texting a joy it also has an inbuilt stylus too incase you are feeling artistic or want to scribble down something in a hurry. I ran a browsing benchmark test on peacekeeper.com which scored my browsing at 478 which was about 80 points higher than the ipad2 and about 150 points higher than a iphone 4s. I havent turned my laptop on since ive had my galaxy note. It also has good battery life an 8 megapixel camera, 16gb of internal storage which is upgradable by 32gb sd card to total of 48gb. Its a gadget lovers dream machine! Only downside the big screen makes it larger than other devices, but its super slim and the benifits of the larger screen far outway the negitives for me. This is my third android phone in 18 months and by far my favourite, im not an iphone fan as i find they are to restrictive on what you can do with them. I prefer the freedom of android. I've been an android and an iphone user for over a year now. I like both android and ios, android does offer a higher level of customisation, especially htc's sense on my sensation and android was by far one of the most easy to navigate operating systems. But ios is my all time favourite as it offers tonnes of apps that actually work really well with the phone and ios hasn't shown any lag unlike android. In addition to the operating system, the 4s is my favourite smartphone because not only that it's one of the sexiest smartphones around, the build quality feels better than any other smartphone, it feels tactile, sturdy and well built like every other smartphone should. As well as the operating system and the build quality, I think that you can't top the retina display, at a pixel density of 330 ppi your eyes can't see beyond the pixels packed under that amazing screen, colour aren't over saturated unlike an AMOLED display. So my favourite smartphone is definitely the iphone 4s, although many of it's competitors like the gs2 or the lumia 800 are highly respectable on their own grounds.

Will wonders never cease! Gadget Show letting something other than an Crapple product win a test? Still couldn't bring themselves to put it where it deserves to be though; in last place! I've got a rooted Desire S. Not the most modern Android phone, but still infinitely better than any Iphone. It really doesn't matter what recent-ish Android phone you pick. It'll be better than an Iphoney in almost every way that matters. Look at the specs of their latest crippled, closed, functionally deficient offering; s-l-o-w 800MHz CPU, only 512mb RAM, tiny low quality 3.5" screen, no 4G, non-expandable memory, no Flash, etc etc. Typical Apple. Always behind the curve, pushing their low-end garbage for high-end prices to the shallow and uninformed. Wake up people! Android is smartphone! Iphone is stupidphone!

So, one version of the iPhone vs multiple Android devices? Split vote for Android. Hmmm, give the iPhone user an iPhone, the Android user an iPhone and the person who has only probably been subjected to Apple marketing both of them, I wonder which will win. How about a blind test? And are iPhone users too biggoted to try an Android?

Open up your mind.. remove all the biases then you'll see that the King is HTC Titan, running Windows Phone 7.5 Take this from the guy who has already used Iphone and Android phone. Titan big screen (4.7") combined with the smoothness, speed and trouble free WP7.5 OS is unmatched now. Iphone is good, but so boring and takes too many clicks to do things.. Android is powerful but too many problems.. WP7.5 somehow manages to capitalize on their problems and comes up a winner. The only problem with WP7.5 Titan is Microsoft itself, not promoting enough

Currently the best phone on the market is without a doubt the HTC Titan. Windows phone 7.5 is in a different league then android and even ios and the Titan's excellent camera, screen, sound and build quality make it an amazing phone. If, however the screen of the Titan (4.7 inch) is too big for you, then the Nokia Lumia 800 is your phone of choice

HTC Sensation Running Android 2.3 does all that an iPhone can do with much more flexibility. And dare i say even more.

the BEST smart phone on the market to date is the Samsung galaxy s 2 it out shines everything that the others have to offer and Apple are playing catch up again. when the 4s was released it was already out of date compared to the Galaxy s 2, not sure why Samsung have downgraded the nexus as the spec is not that good apart from its running ice cream sandwich. so its Android all the my for me in the shape of the galaxy s 2. Samsung has taken a big bite out of Apple, and anyway fruits are for girls, robots are for men. its heavier, slower, no radio, the list goes on compare the phones here: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3621&idPhone2=4212

The Lumia just works when you want it and when you need it. Having used every OS on all devices I can say that none are as reliable as the Nokia 800. Well done Nokia, you are back!

Nokia 800, better screen then the rest. WP7.5 is far far more reliable than android, no malware. I got bored of looking at a grid of icons on IOS and fed up of having to go into an app to do everything.

How can the Samsung Galaxy S2 not be included here?

I have been through all the smartphones. And I would rate them in order as WP7.5, followed by iOS then Android. In my opinion Android is the biggest waste of time I have ever had with a phone, yes it is capable, but its just no where near as stable as it should be. All the gestures dont feel as natural and smooth as iOS or WP7.5. I am now running a HD7 on WP7.5 and its great, its so very fast, eveyrthing works perfectly, it does everything from connecting and controlling my Xbox with the xbox companion, to complete handsfree txt messaging or even facebook messaging in the car! (you dont need to press anything, not even the home button like on siri.) It never crashes, never slows down. It just works perfectly and is a joy to use. iOS and WP7.5 are both the real deal, great OS with good optimised software, and they are both original. Android is a bad copy of iOS with added ability to customise things a bit more, but its not as nice to use, not as fluid and crashing of apps and things happens far to often. IMO the only reason it succeeded is because it was the only genuine alternative to iOS for a long time. Things have changed now, Android is the new Windows Mobile 6 in my books.

Without a question the best smartphone of today is a WP7 device, move over Andorid move over Apple there is a new king in town, as you only list one I vote Nokia Lumia 800, although the Titan is another awesome device depending on your preferred smartphone form factor. Have owned all 3 and these days WP is light years ahead and can't go back to iOS or Android, perhaps these platforms should try concentrating on real features that make a real difference to how you interact with the people and data you care about rather than harping on about features like FaceTime or some robot voice beta thats only use is for amusing YouTube videos.

I have no doubt this show is sponsored by apple! I dont think there has been an episode without mentioning apple! Its getting very frustrating now! The test were apple biased. I guess the final test was better but they should have put the s2 in there. I think the lumina is the best phone right now.

I now own a Samsung Galaxy S2 after changing from a Sony Xperia X10 and have to the say I am so pleased I did. The functions, ease of use, style combined with great video and photo capture can only be described as fantastic. Further more with the Android system allowing you to customize the phone further and Samsung allowing users to try various rom systems (which my present one keeps my phone running up to 2 days now even with emails & social network sites running in the background with updates) makes this a phone a very worthwhile investment.

I currently own the HTC Desire S (purchased june 2011), which i think is a great smartphone. The specs of it are practically identical to the iphone4, but is a fraction of the cost. I got it for free on a 24mth, £25 a month contract. Now there are more powerful androids avaliable but they also cost more per month you're probably looking at £35 a month start if you want the phone for free. I'd very much recommend to anyone to buy this phone if you are looking for a good value smart phone, if you're willing to pay a little more money then maybe stretch to a HTC Sensation or the Samsung Galaxy SII, but the desire s is featured packed running android 2.3 gingerbread, it might be upgraded to android 4 but HTC are at the moment unsure if this is the case. I'd also say if you are on a tight budget or not wanting a contract then you have to look at the HTC Wildfire S, how can they sell a phone of that stardard for under £150, of course it's not as powerful as desire s but it's good enough, you might experience some issues playing some of the higher powered games, but it's certainly not enough to turn you away from an out standing value for money smartphone.

Just watched the videos on the website, which u can't do on the iphone, clearly u guys on the gadget show need to listen to the people who keep u in a job ! Us the buying public, while you fawn over the best gadgets that money can buy u need to take into account that your tests are just not up to scratch, u did not pick the top of the line phones in the market which would have been a fair reflection + if u had picked say the n8, desire hd, Samsung galaxy s as these phones have been higher rated in all online reviews then we may have looked at your test a bit fairer + as a user of apple, android + symbian u have not conducted the most accurate test + should be ashamed that u have taken our money, trust + time while u have fed us apple's so called best products but in fact u r actually scared to do accurate comparisons which would be a fair test for consumers, if u do not respond to the mass of comments that are unanswered then you will lose a lot of peoples trust + viewing figures, so come on gadget show ! Are u big enough to answer the challenge ? If not we all know u must be in bed with a few apples for brekkie!

I would willingly sell my house and half it's contents just to own a Nokia Lumia! Tried all the rest but this is just so fast and easy to use. The number of apps is catching up fast, but the clincher is the facebook - twitter - etc integration in the people hub

i think the iphone is over rated, then again all apple products are. take the mac for example, easy to break very expensive to fix and also to buy. Apple as always will let you know of a new feature their phones will have you buy one and then they tell you it will be on the next model..... hmmm, iPhones are easy to break. i have the Samsung galaxy s, it does everything i want and i dont have to go through ITUNES, i can record a video, Bluetooth it to mates on any other phone except iphone and it works bluetooth it to iphone it dont. i also must agree The Gadget Show must be sponsored by Apple, the tasks involving smartphones are always pushed to apple, take the last episode, A big bag of old junk Vs Iphone.... u mean smartphones right, its not hard to see where that was going.

The Iphone 4 is not even in the competition, it is the Iphone 4S. The Nokia Lumia 800 has a 3.7 inch Amoled CBD display, not a 3.5 inch.

I cannot believe you excluded the Samsung Galaxy SII from your test, Its head and shoulders above anything on the show. Even the nexus. The S II not only blows the iphone away but all other smartphones. A true Iphone killer and king of the smartphones end of !

Best selling phone available in the UK right now is the Galaxy S II, the iPhone 4S is #2 even with all the Apple fans buying it on launch. The Gadget show should be ashamed for not including the most popular and the fastest Android phone available, yes even though it's out since April it's still the fastest. You wouldn't know much about it going by The Gadget Show though.

I currently have a HTC Titan on windows 7 mango and I have got to back any handset running windows 7 mango. It is such a slick and new slant on a phones OS. Granted the apps are a bit lacking but the integration of social networking and office means you only use the marketplace apps for things that aren't everyday. The titan is an amazing feeling phone very thin, extremely fast with its 1.5 ghz processor. Battery life is good and the 4.7inch screen it so clear. the resolution is lower than others but because the screen is so big you dont notice it at all. I used to be a blackberry mad fan and it was a big step for me to move away but I'm glad I did. I researched and tested every other OS and handset and although IOS and Android are fun I find them too much of a toy and not much a practical tool. Although there both capable of the same its too much in and out of different apps to get different things working which is not productive in my working day. This is my second windows phone 7 previously having the Mozart and I cant see myself switching OS for a long time. Microsoft are banking a lot on this new metrostyle OS across the board trying to create a single style and complete integration between them all. Xbox has just joined the style and with the Laptop Killer Windows 8 coming next year. My money is with Windows in 2012. at the end of the day units sold they are still much much larger than anybody else including apple and what they to affects the whole market. :)

By far the best at the moment is Nokia Lumia 800. The N9 is also great and they should have promoted that more. The Lumia 900 will be a sensation, since the 800 has already blown me away. It's fast, reliable and it just works!

iPhone is old... Android is an open source buggy clone of the iPhone. WP7 on Lumia or Titan is new, unique, fast and reliable.

You clearly have some deal with apple as you don't have the Samsung Galaxy S2 on the best smart phone list. As it blows iphone and other smart phones away.. Tbf that's why it won phone of the year at T3

Those are expensive! Samsung Omnia W or nokia lumia 710 are the bests.
