I watched with interest laste night, as I actually work for a firm which provides a software service (SaaS) which is delivered via the cloud. I was however rather disapointed at the tests you gave them. I do think they were rather biased towards the hard drive and it was inevitable that Otis won. (sorry Otis!!) I would have loved to see some tests which displayed the real strength of cloud technology to give this new sector a chance to fight back!! Cloud tech is the future!!! Give us a chance to prove our selves! LOL! One of the key areas which makes cloud technology so powerful and exciting it the ability to share information safely and securely. And it's the word share which is vital. Working on your own files is always going to be faster on your own hard drive. But sharing.... that's another matter all together! Polly touched on it in the market stall challenge but it goes way beyond the likes of Facebook and Youtube. Business and academics are using online hosted platforms to collaborate with disparate team members and other companies all across the globe. Most large projects, like the building of the 2012 Olympic Stadium, are being achived by hosting all project information and communication in cloud based SaaS construction collaboration tools. Go on.... give cloud tech a more appropriate challenge..... and we will rise to it!!

I am a technological dimwit so sorry if I can't give you all the details but our broadband link stopped working completely last Thursday evening (30th September) due to a fault between HQ and our house (ie. nothing to do with us and our equipment, that was the first thing my Systems Analyst husband tried!). The ISP/BT or whoever it was had to run tests continuously for days before they could fix it and finally got us back on line late yesterday. I run a business from home, and that meant four days without banking or networking facilities and worse - over 100 genuine emails (EXCLUDING spam and junk!) to deal with when the system came back. It scared me to discover how much I'd come to rely on something that's totally out of my control. After that disaster, I'd be VERY wary about trusting everything to the clouds!

I saw one important point in the cloud's favour, that of downloading files after hard drive failure, but it's an issue mostly if you haven't done proper backups. 1TB external hard drives are not too expensive for doing that at your home base, reducing the risk of data loss. A memory stick is good enough for a few files on the move. I keep a copy of all files I've uploaded to the web because any of those sites could go down at a moment's notice. I would never depend solely on a cloud source because one thing that's worse than someone else getting your data is if you don't have a copy yourself, to prove it's yours! I agree with the show, that we are too beholden to our broadband connections, which are not under our control. Sharing files is important and the ability to use a crows-sourced process is useful but if I want to use a process often, or guarantee it's there when I need it, my own computer is the only place to put it. We don't have the web reliability or speed yet. South Korea has the web speed and is likely to lead us towards crowd-centric culture, but discovering whether it is good enough there to use many everyday complex apps (speed, reliability, complexity, multi-user capability) is a good way to blow the programme's budget :-) Perhaps a Gadget Show spoof company should attempt to produce a collaborative technical product from 5 places, some of which would be out of WiFi range of each other. Include lots of complex crowd-based apps and a requirement for a professional result.

The idea of cloud storage just doesn't wash with me. How can a remote server running 24/7, contributing even more to CO2 emissions, be more eco-friendly than using external USB hard disks? Which only need to be powered on as and when required. Also increasing the life of the hard disk into the bargain. Never mind the pathetic speed of UK broadband, which is just like being back in the 1980s waiting data to transfer to/from cassette tape. Bonkers!

What about the legalities of access? Does not storing files on their systems give them rights to read/access all YOUR files? Banks do it with your money. I believe legally it does. Do you want them to read all your private correspondence or look at pictures that are private ? Whether or not cloud computing is the future people should have their own backup. I have had to rescue so many peoples "lost" personal data/music/pictures through problems. NOTE a single backup is NOT enough! I once suffered a double failure of computers within 2 days, but luckily had a third copy of all my files.

@Pip. If you run your business from home and you are so reliant on the Internet, why hav'nt you got a back up in plan? We depend on the Internet and we have a cable Internet package, a BT Internet package and a wireless 3G dongle set up. Technology is great, if you stay on top of things. Preparing your online business, for all eventualities is essential in this day and age and should be done sooner rather than later. My 2cent!

@technogeist05 because one server can store hundreds of accounts on one solid state hard drive, apposed to having a hundred hard drives spinning, although at the moment we still rely on our own operating systems running locally on our own PC's, in the future your PC will be no more than a window into the cloud, where we will do everything. Like it or hate it, that's the way it will be within the next 2-5 years.
