Carry on camcorder...

Wednesday 26 August 2009

Three HD camcorders; one posh presenter. Sounds like an HD camcorder face-off to us!

What better way to test the latest crop of top-end HD camcorders than by heading to Cape Canaveral in Florida to film a space shuttle launch? Well, that’s the argument I put to The Gadget Show producers and happily (for me at least) they agreed to send me Stateside!

So, three contenders, but there can be only one. And first up was the Sony HDR-XR520VE. With a price tag weighing in at close to a grand, it boasts a staggering 101 hours of filming time on its 240GB hard disk! It also has GPS, so it’ll record exactly where you’re shooting! All that’s topped off with a 12x optical zoom, image stabilisation for steady take-off shots and a zoom microphone for isolated sound capture!

Next up was the Panasonic HDC-TM300 with a £760 price and 32GB of solid state memory. It has three separate sensors to record really natural colours in 1080p High-Definition. There are plenty of manual images, plus there’s a focus tracking feature that keeps your subject continually focussed.

Finally I got to grips with the Canon Legria HF S10. With a 32GB Flash drive and a large single sensor for producing beautiful colours. There’s no touchscreen or viewfinder, but it does get a price of just £881!

So, which of the contenders could rock it (geddit? rocket!) and which would come crashing down to earth in a heap of misplaced HD madness? Watch the video to find out!
