It is evident by the terrible viewing figures that Channel 5 have made a disastrous decision to change the format and presenters for the new Gadget show series. I usually watch the programme religiously, but all I could stand of the new series was the first half hour of the first programme. I would not be surprised if ITV, Sky or the BBC launch an alternative show, with the old presenters, and with a format that WORKS. In fact, I would go as far as to say if Sky Atlantic launched a programme, I would renew my subscription. I hope serious talks are taking place between Currys/PC world, Channel5 and Suzi's/Ortis'/Jon's agents at the moment. If not, a great programme will be lost.

The new format was such a major disappointment. Bring back Suzy Perry!! & Jon Bentley. Suzy is the ultimate gadget girl presenter and so much better then Pollyanna. For the first time since this show started, this year I didn't watch it after the first episode. Get a new studio set also, and make sure you filmeverything in HD! It took you CH5 ages to even film in HD.

WHY when you have such a GOOD SHOW do you have to change it, PLEASE PLEASE bring back the whole team. It was so great to watch, and what great banter between them was one of the highlight. Also are they all going to the Christmas show in London. We do hope so.

the above photo showing all the team from GSL 2012 should be removed as its only jason bradbury (tv clown) and pollyanna (wannabe page3) presenting. hope another channel picks up the others would be a winner with out these 2.

I must have been living on the moon NOT to know that the 'Tour' format way the new way of presenting the Gadget Show. Just my fourpenneth - its awful, and I've been following the show for ages. One of the things that made the orginal show work was the interaction between the presenters, and you can't have that with just two of them. The stilted 'I'm giving an interview / opinion to someone about this tech' is a work of unbelievable crassness. I was screaming at the screen "Talk to me not them." What ever went on in the production office ahead of this appalling series for heavens sake BITE THE BULLET and realise you got it badly wrong. Get the Suzi Otis and John back - revive the old format and people will flood to Gadget Show Live at Christmas - stick with it as it is and your figures will be terminally low.

I was very sad and somewaht annoyed to hear that CH5 had dropped three of the presenters and went with a new format. I watched the first episode not knowing what had happened. I thought at first it was just a special with the other three making appearances at some point but alas. As soon as I found out, I stopped watching the others and I won't be watching any future episodes. The other broadcasters have an opportunity here!! Bye Bye Gadget Show.

After being a huge fan of The Gadget Show for many years and enjoying Gadget Show Live for three years I was bitterly disappointed to hear of the loss of presenters Suzi, Ortis and Jon. I really don't understand what Channel 5's decision makers were thinking of with the radical change to the programme, the whole reason the old format worked was the interaction between the presenters, they all brought something unique and when mixed together it made a programme that was one of the best on British television. Why oh why do people decide to "improve" things, new doesn't always mean better and in this case it has completely destroyed a winning format. You should be ashamed Channel 5 that you have disappointed so many loyal fans, many of whom will have visited this years Gadget Show Live in April - I certainly found the live Super Theatre Show a tad uncomfortable to watch and you could tell there was an underlying tension not just with the presenters but with all of us in the audience who could blatantly see that the coming changes were ludicrous in the extreme.

I too was an avid fan of the gadget show BEFORE the series changed. The last one was nowhere near as good as before and I found myself not watching the episodes. It became more of a global "jolly" than an informative gadget programme and certainly not as good as the banter with all the previous presenters..... Channel 5, listen to your audience and show that you act on the feedback....reinstate the old format....and the other presenters.... Otherwise i think you will lose some valuable ratings and a real audience gem....

It is not funny anymore, no cheap tech. I would have gone to the xmas show even if it had been in scotland, i would have travelled, but until u admit ur wrong and bring the old show back. Bye

Remember the previous series, when Ch.5 moved it from it's usual monday night slot to friday? Very quickly moved back to mondays when it was clear the folk who watch the programme weren't happy! Then the last series was a global jolly, and nowhere near as good as the usual programme. I'm a big fan of Jason and Polly, but they are part of a team, and it's just not the same without Suzy, Otis and John. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Please get the programme back to how it was, and with the same team of presenters, on monday nights, and then leave it well alone!!

I really don't like the new approach. The show is simply not the same without the full crew a day style. This new format is more like reading a copy of stuff or t3 - I don't want that in a tv show, I want a degree of personality and banter - this simply doesn't have it. Time to find a new gadget show I think, I'm sure discovery will have something
Report as inappropriateAaron06 November 2012
I can't believe that Channel 5 would do this.. Why? I saw the globe trotting episodes in summer and thought it was just some spin off thing. I had NO idea that they had dropped the other presenters! When the first new episode aired yesterday, I assumed it was some new format, and different presenters would be on later, or maybe different presenters were being use in different episodes.. Devastated to find out the truth! It makes no sense, why change something that has worked so well for years? Poly sucks as a presenter, the newest, she clearly has little knowledge of any tech, and I always found her 'spots' awkward, because it was like she was talking about stuff she really had no idea about. I think Jason is great, energetic, enthusiastic, and slightly bonkers, but with a genuine interest and knowledge of tech. Suzi was the ultimate gadget girl, hot as hell and still actually knew what she was talking about! Ortis again, was like Jason, but not quite as bonkers. John brought some sensibility to the show, with actual logic and useful information. Without the whole team, all that is left is Jason carrying the show and Poly. I noticed earlier in the year at the live show, the atmosphere wasn't as good, I put it down to a 'Friday crowd' instead of the Saturday frenzy the year before. Unfortunately, it is most likely the team knew about the split and weren't enthused. We can all sit and hope and wish that Channel 5 listen to our pleads, but the reality is that they won't bring back the old show, and the old presenters probably wouldn't return anyway. BIG mistake C5, BIG mistake! End of an era for me, and quite sad about it. Only 1 of 2 shows I even watch on TV!

Report as inappropriateAndre Willey09 November 2012
Not impressed here either. The two-presenter tour format was fine as a brief diversion, but not for the regular show. The subject matter of technology lends itself to a more studio-based format with insert articles, rather than running around in the countryside. Sorry guys, but epic fail so far, you've taken something perfectly watchable and wrecked it.

AWillertoni09 November 2012
So very disappointed. I've watch TGS for years. The format was always informative and entertaining, with good interplay between the presenters. The great thing was that all the presenters were different, so they had someone for every type of technology and challenge. The gadgets reviewed were mostly relevant to the everyday person and affordable. The introduction of Top Gear-style challenges made for great watching (although they were probably too frequent and fresh ideas ran a little dry). I did wonder why Pollyanna was brought in a year or so ago to boost the team to 5. It didn't feel necessary to me, but the show was still required watching for me. Now having watched (or tried to) the new style show it feels like part of my life has died! I know that the show I used to love will never be back. I've given up on it to be honest. The 1-to-1s with the camera are cringeworthy, the tests are ridiculous (testing earphones by rolling down a slope inside a giant ball????!!) and the gadget specs that flash up really annoy me - they are not on the screen long enough to read and many of them are white font on light-coloured images in the background, making them unreadable. It is as if the program is being put together by amateurs with no knowledge or qualifications in media or usability for the viewers. I do not buy the cost-cutting excuse for getting rid of the old presenters - the new show is seemingly more high budget and attempting to be flash. Indeed the 'world tour' pointlessly featured a load of tech we will either never get, need or be able to afford. I cannot understand why the management/producers of this show decided to decimate a winning formula. Did they not perform a feasibility study to check their new ideas with viewers? There are some very basic but major management issues here from my point of view. Sure there is always improvements to be made, and some aspects of the show could have done with freshening up - but I fully expect the ratings of this show to continue to drop now. Then what? sponsors will pull out? Companies will stop sending so much sample gadgets and test/ free kit? In 20 minutes of looking round the internet I have found 3 positive comments from viewers about the new show - and HUNDREDS/THOUSANDS of negative ones. Put simply, in the age of the internet when I can go online and instantly research or get details of any technology, it says something that the old show still made me want to watch and offered me something extra. The new show simply does not do that and I now have no need or desire to watch. RIP Gadget Show - my hope now is that another broadcaster is able to fill the gap in the market left by the death of the old show.

I am very disappointed with the new series. I had already bought my tickets for the christmas show before I knew about the radical changes to the presenters. Ottis and Suzy were my favourites. The new format of the show is simply boring and missing the reviews of common affordable gadgets. Why can you not enter the competition free on-line as is offered on other shows? I am sad to witness a once very enjoyable show be condemned to this. What are you thinking of channel 5?

Quite simply, I cannot understand why the winning format of an excellent and informative show has been changed. The "tour" format does not lend itself to a show of this nature. The studio-based format is much better and does justice to the tech reviews. If the "powers that be" feel that the old format was tired, in need of change in the name of progress and out-of-touch with what the viewers want they are very much mistaken. I have no issue with the current two presenters but feel that five presenters offered a more varied approach to gadget testing and review. I have been an avid viewer of The Gadget Show since its inception but could only manage half an hour of episode 1 before switching off. I will not be watching this show ever again in the present format. Another viewer lost from the ratings.

Report as inappropriateBert Squirrel18 November 2012
The 2 presenter show lacks a purpose, doing tests of laptops on park benches is a bit pointless. New tech isn't that much currently only improvements & combining, so what can they do? This hasn't been so watchable mostly. Jason is the Tech King, Polly is a bit cool if competent, Suzi was more fun. The 5 person one with endless challenges was getting a bit dull. Suzi as much as we like her was less involved as time went on, John was hardly in the show & Otis was getting too hysterical too often.

I think Jason and Polly are ok but it was all about the banter between the five presenters and it just doesn't work without Suzi, Ortis and Jon. The location based format just seems like an excuse for a jolly and you've basically taken all the boring bits from the old format and made them into an entire show. A tech show lends itself much better to studio format. Testing laptops on a park bench and TVs in some random persons front room is just bizzare. Also the 'off camera' style interviews are so cringeworthy I can't bear to watch them. Whoever made the decision to change the format has got it badly wrong because we can clearly see from the feedback that the new format is an epic fail.

However what else is on when you want your gadget fix each week and don't try to sell me that other show that sky 1 tried earlier in the year. The only thing I can really say is I can't see then new format of the gadget tour lasting due to there's only so many countries you can visit surely I mean what kind of tech will they have in Azerbaijan these days?!

Not the presenters fault, but the new format is awful. I was a big fan of the old show, and loved the banter between the presenters. Suzi, Jon and Ortis are badly missed, and I have now stopped watching the show completely. ( I can highly recommend Stephen fry's Gadget Man. While I'm about it, I've always hated the ridiculous 'win more things than you could ever want or cope with' competition. Surely it would be more exciting to have a large number of winners, all winning a single prize, in a tombola type draw, so you could win a small fun gadget, or a large expensive high tech gadget. Much more chance of winning, and much more fun!

Dear sir/madam, whatevers? as a child of the tomorrows world era, I am not totally sure whats going on with the current programs, like polyanna but penny on the big bang has a better outlook on science whilst I appreciate costs and sponsorship can you have a look at more future tech, coverage of the ces show in vegas would be good some of the what has this technology done for us ? is this all worth the money ? analysis that john used to bring to the show talk a bit more to some of the scientists and creators where do they expect theese things to lead in the next 20 /50 years Im sorry but i mainly watch now to view the repiticious prizes in a competion that I will never win tel me why do you no longer take calls from land lines ? more money (again) many thanks

Umm, looks like my last two comments have been removed, for some reason....they were quite long posts wi what I feel was some constructive feedback, but to sum it up, the new show is...yep, crap, wooden, tired, so sad that a great show has been reduced to this.

I haven't really bothered with the new season because of this awful decision to shed 3 of the best presenters the show had. Polly just isn't up to it when compared with Suzy and looks like she was simply brought in to deal with Suzi getting older. Jon was great at doing straight reviews and Ortis was a good addition to the show. Jason on his own with Polly ? What were you thinking Channel 5, its just not the same and feels very weak... You had 3 presenters originally, then 5, now 2 ..Tried it on Fridays, then back to Mondays.. Whoever is managing this program needs replacing ! I do Hope the BBC picks up on what is a really interesting program...

What have you done taking suzi, John and Ortiz off the show?? Jason is excellent but Pollyanna just isn't good enough in my opinion and nowhere near as good as the evervescent suzi and techy guru John. The 5 worked well together with their different personalities but with just the 2 now and with the world tour platform it just isn't anywhere near as entertaining - even with the super cool Jason! Please please do something about it even with suzi and John joining Jason it would be much better as they were the key presenters and all offering very different qualities to the show! I also think one person winning all the prizes is ridiculous, who needs 5 tvs 5 bikes and 5 laptops etc it would be much better with 5prize winners and everyone gets better odds at winning something too? Regards, previous fan!

Well...mmmm ... not sure what the difference is between old to new shows but sonsored by Window 8? THAT is interesting, whren Microsoft argued 'hardware v software' excuses in the 'market forces days of the 80's and 90's! They are trialling a tablet with s StrongARM chip in! Why? It probably saves more energy than anuclear power station to a PC which can fry your wotsits on its overheated graphics cards and needs recharging every 3hrs! Bring back RiscOS I say and let's show these gadget geeks the real way to save energy on a Boeing 787 or Blackberry or Iphone etc.,! The amount of energy wasted on Microsoft software never ceases to amaze me. Most people STILL don't know how to save a file properly in Windows because Microsoft 'Folder's' are really 'directories' and Risc-OS windows never use to shut down automatically when you clicked off a file etc.,. Should 'Market Forces' decide the best computer system? I don't think so.

Why change the shows format? It's nowhere as good as it was! Pls change it back to the old gang. Otis, suzi,John. The show is just not as enjoyable as it was with all the presenters. Change it back for next season.

The new format is lame to say the least, when it was Suzi, Jason & John it was at its best, even when Otis joined he brought another element and still great, THEN along came prolly! She only brought 2 things to the show, she is not a gadgeteer like the others, fained boring attempts to sound interested in what she was showing. The viewing figures show the revamped show for what it is - lucky to get 900k watching, the old format could easily pull in 1.5m - this will be cancelled, too late to get the old gang back now, they have pride not like the remaining 2 - Suzi will be back on in march, channel 5's loss F1's gain

I'm not sure if this will be read by the people who run the production of the gadget show but I will leave my comments anyway. I have to say I am very disappointed about the new formate of the show, taking out Otis, John and Suzie was a big mistake, you have taken the soul out of the show. Iv tried 4 times to watch the new show and have 10 episodes saved in my sky planner but I will be deleting these now and will stop my sky box from recording what was a great gadget show. Hopefully you will realise the mistakes you have made and revert the show back to its former glory. If this is done I will happily return to watching the show. Signing off

Gadget show 2012 was not worth the money. The live part of the show where the gadget show presenters performed for the audience was a total anti-climax. Definitely NOT worth the money especially in todays financial climate
Report as inappropriateAnne Wren27 February 2013
I agree with the views expressed about the awful format of the latest series of Gadget Show. Jason & Polly are similar hyper personalities which, without the other great personalities adding variety, really get on my nerves. My family have given up on the show will not be buying tickets for anymore tours! Have the brains behind this new format answered their critics yet?

Where did Suzy and Otis go? If they went by their own accord fair so, but if not BRING EM BACK! I hope this wasn't a silly executive decision.

Went to Gadget show yesterday. Got to say disapointed at show against cost ratio £100 for the three of us. : -( sorry but the truth. I wanted more gadget stuff demo'd at the show, wow us don't just run the clock down. I will think long and hard before booking again.

I really liked the gadget show and it was my first time at gadget show live this year. The more I think about it, the more I realise I paid to walk around curry's, pc world and the trafford centre. With the cost of a hotel and parking, that is a lot of money to shell out to walk around tech that is in the shops. I was expecting to play games that I couldn't buy within the next month and future tech. Bits of the show were ok but nothing that was, wow that's amazing. Most of it was watching other people win prizes than revealing new tech. Disappointed really. I won't be going next year and I feel a bit ripped off.

I used to watch gadget show religiously every week and absolutely loved it. The dynamics of the presenters Suzi, Jon and Jason were great! A presenter for different ages who had passion for different gadgets but also their on screen banter was good to watch. I also enjoyed watching the guest presenters like Dallas, Otis and Gail. When I found out Suzi and Jon were going, I've lost interest a little because they were a great team. I still like to watch gadget show now and then because Jason's enthusiasm is infectious, and he's so passionate about any gadget that you get excited and exhausted just watching him bounce with energy. Polly, I've not quite warmed up to her yet but look forward to seeing what she can bring to the team.

Computer architecture From Citizendium, the Citizens' CompendiumJump to:navigation,searchaddthis_pub = 'citizendium';] This is adraft article, under development and not meant to be cited; you can help to improve it.[edit intro]Computer architectureis often used to refer to an area of specialization within the academic discipline ofcomputer science. At other times, the phrasecomputer architecturemay be used to refer to a specific machine specification, such asSPARC,Intel X86,PowerPC, orMotorola 680x0.A more precise designation for specifying such machines isinstruction set architecture(ISA).In the 1980's, when computer architecture programs first began within computer science departments at various universities, heavy emphasis was placed on research related to designing better ISA's.Nowadays, the industry has converged on a few different ISA's and tends to rebuild them over and over again with faster hardware, so computer architecture has moved to focus more on the ways to speed up computer hardware and system-level software than on designing new ISA's.The academic discipline of computer architecture thus tends to overlap somewhat with fields calledcomputer engineering, or the like, that usually are located within the academic discipline ofelectrical engineering. The field known as computer architecture may touch all aspects of how specific computers can be specified, built, and verified (tested). This article will discuss the basics of computer organization, and related articles will expand on each basic part, since the design of computers involves a broad and complex set of technologiesntents1Basics of computer organization2Digital circuits3I/O devices4Programs4.1Libraries and operating systems5Alternative computing models5.showTocToggle) var tocShowText = "show"; var tocHideText = "hide"; showTocToggle(); Basics of computer organizationThe basic building blocks of anelectronic, general-purpose computer are theprocessor, thememory, and the input and output devices (collectively termed I/O).Each of these building blocks is connected to a shared "bus", which is a bundle of wires for conducting electrical signals equivalent to binary 0's or 1's.In this way, binary numbers (the "data" to be manipulated by the processor) can be transmitted from memory to processor, where it is changed and then the result moved back into memory.Later, from the memory, the data can then be transmitted over the bus to an output device such as a printer.Of course, since there was typically just one bus, each part of the computer had to wait its turn, and everything had to happen in the correct order over time. The movement of electrical signals ("information") through the building blocks of the computer is synchronized and coordinated by a special circuit, called theControl unit, by means of an electrical signal called aclockwhich the Control units sends to all the other parts of the computer. The firstelectronic, general-purpose computers had ACCU Dell U444C to be instructed how to manipulate data by physically rewiring theprocessorof the computer, while the memory of the computer contained thedatato be manipulated. But soon a huge conceptual breakthrough was made during the building of the Eniac in the 1940's.Eniac designers realized that a computer could be designed to store bothmachine instructionsandthe data to be manipulated in the computer's memory bank. This concept immediately became adopted in all subsequent computer designs and is still used today.Although he did not invent the concept, mathematician John von Neumann was the first to document it, and so sometimes the phraseVon Neumannarchitecture (orVon Neumanncomputer) has been used to describe putting the program, as well as the data, in a computer's memory.A computer's memory can be viewed as a list of cells, each with a unique, numbered "address".Each cell can store a small, fixed amount of information (a binary number). This binary number can either be an instruction, telling the computer what to do, ordatawhich the computer is to process according to the "program" or instructions. In principle, any cell can be used to store either instructions or data; in practice, computers are designed to help programmers make sure that instructions and data, while both stored somewhere in the memory, are not accidentally mixed up.The first is arithmetic operations; for instance, adding or subtracting two numbers together. The set of arithmetic operations may be very limited; indeed, some designs do not directly support multiplication and division operations (instead, users support multiplication and division through programs that perform multiple additions, subtractions, and other digit manipulations). The second class of ALU operations involvescomparisonoperations: given two numbers, determining if they are equal, or if not equal which is larger. The I/O systems are the means by which the computer receives information from the outside world, and reports its results back to that world. On a typical personal computer, input devices include objects like the keyboard andmouse, and output devices includecomputer monitors, printersand the like, but as will be discussed later a huge variety of devices can be connected to a computer and serve as I/O devices. Its job is to read instructions and data from memory or the I/O devices, decode the instructions, providing the ALU with the correct inputs according to the instructions, "tell" the ALU what operation to perform on those inputs, and send the results back to the memory or to the I/O devices. One key component of the control system is a counter that keeps track of what the address of the current instruction is; typically, this is incremented each time an instruction is executed, unless the instruction itself indicates that the next instruction should be at some other location (allowing the computer to repeatedly execute the same instructions).Since the 1980s the ALU and control unit (collectively called acentral processing unitor CPU) have typically been located on a singleintegrated circuitcalled amicroprocessor. The functioning of such a computer is in principle quite straightforward.Typically, on each clock cycle, the computer fetches instructions and data from its memory. The instructions are executed, the results are stored, and the next instruction is fetched. This procedure repeats until ahaltinstruction is encountered. The set of instructions interpreted by the control unit, and executed by the ALU, are limited in number, precisely defined, and very simple operations.Broadly, they fit into one or more of four categories: 1) moving data from one location to another (an example might be an instruction that "tells" the CPU to "copy the contents of memory cell 5 and place the copy in cell 10").2) executing arithmetic and logical processes on data (for instance, "add the contents of cell 7 to the contents of cell 13 and place the result in cell 20").3) testing the condition of data ("if the contents of cell 999 are 0, the next instruction is at cell 30").4) altering the sequence of operations (the previous example alters the sequence of operations, but instructions such as "the next instruction is at cell 100" are also standard)structions, like data, are represented within the computer asbinarycode 鈥?a base two system of counting. For example, the code for one kind of "copy" operation in the Intel x86 line of microprocessors is 10110000[1].The particular instruction set that a specific computer supports is known as that computer'smachine language.Using an already-popular machine language makes it much easier to run existing software on a new machine; consequently, in markets where commercial software availability is important suppliers have converged on one or a very small number of distinct machine languages.More powerful computers such asminicomputers, mainframe computersandserversmay differ from the model above by dividing their work between more than one main processor.Multiprocessingrefers to computation with multiple processors;multicore processorsare primarily ways to package more than one processors onto the sameintegrated circuit, although some multicore architectures do share on-chip resources among multiple processors.[2][3]Supercomputersoften have highly unusual architectures significantly different from the basic stored-program architecture, sometimes featuring thousands of CPUs, but such designs tend to be useful only for specialized tasks. At the other end of the size scale, somemicrocontrollersuse theHarvard architecturethat ensures that program and data memory are logically separate.Digital circuitsThe conceptual design above could be implemented using a variety of different technologies. As previously mentioned, a stored program computer could be designed entirely of mechanical components likeBabbage's devices or theDigi-Comp I.However, digital circuitsallowBoolean logicandarithmetic using binary numbersto be implemented usingelectronic relays.Shannon's famous thesis showed how relays could be arranged to form units calledlogic gates, implementing simple Boolean operations.Others soon figured out thatvacuum tubes鈥?electronic devices, could be used instead.Vacuum tubes were originally used as a signalamplifierfor radio and other applications, but were used in digital electronics as a very fast switch; when electricity is provided to one of the pins, current can flow through between the other two.Through arrangements of logic gates, one can build digital circuits to do more complex tasks, for instance, anadder, which implements in electronics the same method 鈥?in computer terminology, analgorithm鈥?to add two numbers together that children are taught 鈥?add one column at a time, and carry what's left over.Eventually, through combining circuits together, a complete ALU and control system can be built up.CSIRAC, one of the earliest stored-program computers, is probably close to the smallest practically useful design. It had about 2,000 valves, some of which were "dual components"[4], so this represented somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 logic components.Vacuum tubes had severe limitations for the construction of large numbers of gates. They were expensive, unreliable (particularly when used in such large quantities), took up a lot of space, and used a lot of electrical power, and, while incredibly fast compared to a mechanical switch, had limits to the speed at which they could operate. Therefore, by the 1960s they were replaced by thetransistor, a new device which performed the same task as the tube but was much smaller, faster operating, reliable, used much less power, and was far cheapertegrated circuitsare the basis of modern digital computing hardware the 1960s and 1970s, the transistor itself was gradually replaced by theintegrated circuit, which placed multiple transistors (and other components) and the wires connecting them on a single, solid piece of silicon.By the 1970s, the entire ALU and control unit, the combination becoming known as aCPU, were being placed on a single "chip" called amicroprocessor.Over the history of the integrated circuit, the number of components that can be placed on one has grown enormously. The first IC's contained a few tens of components; as of 2006, the Intel Core Duo processor contains 151 million transistors.[5]Tubes, transistors, and transistors on integrated circuits can be used as the "storage" component of the stored-program architecture, using a circuit design known as aflip-flop, and indeed flip-flops are used for small amounts of very high-speed storage. However, few computer designs have used flip-flops for the bulk of their storage needs.Instead, earliest computers stored data inWilliams tubes鈥?essentially, projecting some dots on a TV screen and reading them again, ormercury delay lineswhere the data was stored as sound pulses travelling slowly (compared to the machine itself) along long tubes filled with mercury. These somewhat ungainly but effective methods were eventually replaced by magnetic memory devices, such asmagnetic core memory, where electrical currents were used to introduce a permanent (but weak) magnetic field in some ferrous material, which could then be read to retrieve the data.A DRAM unit is a type of integrated circuit containing huge banks of an electronic component called acapacitorwhich can store an electrical charge for a period of time. The level of charge in a capacitor could be set to store information, and then measured to read the information when required.I/O devicesI/O (short for input/output) is a general term for devices that send computers information from the outside world and that return the results of computations. These results can either be viewed directly by a user, or they can be sent to another machine, whose control has been assigned to the computer: In arobot, for instance, the controlling computer's major output device is the robot itself. The first generation of computers were equipped with a fairly limited range of input devices.Apunch cardreader, or something similar, was used to enter instructions and data into the computer's memory, and some kind of printer, usually a modifiedteletype, was used to record the results. For the personal computer, for instance, keyboardsandmiceare the primary ways people directly enter information into the computer; andmonitorsare the primary way in which information from the computer is presented back to the user, thoughprinters, speakers, and headphones are common, too. There is a huge variety of other devices for obtaining other types of input. One example is thedigital camera, which can be used to input visual information. The first class is that ofsecondary storagedevices, such ashard disks,CD-ROMs,key drivesand the like, which represent comparatively slow, but high-capacity devices, where information can be stored for later retrieval; the second class is that of devices used to accesscomputer networks. The ability to transfer data between computers has opened up a huge range of capabilities for the computer. The globalInternetallows millions of computers to transfer information of all types between each other.ProgramsComputer programsare simply lists of instructions for the computer to execute. These can range from just a few instructions which perform a simple task, to a much more complex instruction list which may also include tables of data. Many computer programs contain millions of instructions, and many of those instructions are executed repeatedly.A typical modernPC(in the year 2005) can execute around 3 billion instructions per second.Computers do not gain their extraordinary capabilities through the ability to execute complex instructions.Rather, they do millions of simple instructions arranged by people known asprogrammers practice, people do not normally write the instructions for computers directly in machine language.Such programming is time-consuming and error-prone, making programmers less productive.Instead, programmers describe the desired actions in a "high level"programming languagewhich is then translated into the machine language automatically by special computer programs (interpretersandcompilers). Some programming languages map very closely to the machine language, such asAssembly Language(low level languages); at the other end, languages likePrologare based on abstract principles far removed from the details of the machine's actual operation (high level languages). The language chosen for a particular task depends on the nature of the task, the skill set of the programmers, tool availability and, often, the requirements of the customers (for instance, projects for the US military were often required to be in theAda programming language)puter softwareis an alternative term for computer programs; it is a more inclusive phrase and includes all the ancillary material accompanying the program needed to do useful tasks. For instance, avideo gameincludes not only the program itself, but also data representing the pictures, sounds, and other material needed to create the virtual environment of the game.Acomputer applicationis a piece of computer software provided to many computer users, often in a retail environment. The stereotypical modern example of an application is perhaps theoffice suite, a set of interrelated programs for performing common office tasks.Going from the extremely simple capabilities of a single machine language instruction to the myriad capabilities of application programs means that many computer programs are extremely large and complex.A typical example isWindows XP, created from roughly 40 millionlines of computer codein theC++programming language;[6]there are many projects of even bigger scope, built by large teams of programmers. The management of this enormous complexity is key to making such projects possible; programming languages, and programming practices, enable the task to be divided into smaller and smaller subtasks until they come within the capabilities of a single programmer in a reasonable period.Nevertheless, the process of developing software remains slow, unpredictable, and error-prone; the discipline ofsoftware engineeringhas attempted, with some success, to make the process quicker and more productive and improve the quality of the end product.A problem or a model iscomputationalif it is formalized in such way that can be transformed to the form of a computer ACCU Dell 312-0334 program.Computationality is the serious research problem of humanistic, social and psychological sciences, for example, modern systemics, cognitive and socio-cognitive[7]approaches develop different attempts to the computational specification of their "soft" knowledge.Libraries and operating systemsSoon after the development of the computer, it was discovered that certain tasks were required in many different programs; an early example was computing some of the standard mathematical functions. For the purposes of efficiency, standard versions of these were collected in libraries and made available to all who required them.A particularly common task set related to handling the gritty details of "talking" to the various I/O devices, so libraries for these were quickly developed.By the 1960s, with computers in wide industrial use for many purposes, it became common for them to be used for many different jobs within an organization.Soon, special software to automate the scheduling and execution of these many jobs became available. The combination of managing "hardware" and scheduling jobs became known as the "operating system"; the classic example of this type of early operating system wasOS/360byIBM.[8]The next major development in operating systems wastimesharing鈥?the idea that multiple users could use the machine "simultaneously" by keeping all of their programs in memory, executing each user's program for a short time so as to provide the illusion that each user had their own computer.Such a development required the operating system to provide each user's programs with a "virtual machine" such that one user's program could not interfere with another's (by accident or design). The range of devices that operating systems had to manage also expanded; a notable one washard disks; the idea of individual "files" and a hierarchical structure of "directories" (now often called folders) greatly simplified the use of these devices for permanent storage.Security access controls, allowing computer users access only to files, directories and programs they had permissions to use, were also common.Another major addition to the operating system was tools to provide programs with a standardizedgraphical user interface. While there are few technical reasons why a GUI has to be tied to the rest of an operating system, it allows the operating system vendor to encourage all the software for their operating system to have a similar looking and acting interface. With the rise of theInternetmost operating systems have a TCP/IP networking stack.Just as hard disks induced operating systems to come up with storage abstractions of files and directories, the network hardware induced abstractions such as sockets and URLs.The regular connection of computers to the Internet raised the importance of security in Operating Systems and as a result operating systems have had to adopt firewall, encryption, update and runtime protection functionalities.Outside these "core" functions, operating systems are usually shipped with an array of other tools, some of which may have little connection with these original core functions but have been found useful by enough customers for a provider to include them. For instance, Apple'sMac OS Xships with adigital video editorapplication.Operating systems for smaller computers may not provide all of these functions. The operating systems for earlymicrocomputerswith limited memory and processing capability did not, andEmbedded computerstypically have specialized operating systems or no operating system at all, with their custom application programs performing the tasks that might otherwise be delegated to an operating system.Alternative computing modelsDespite the massive gains in speed and capacity over the history of the digital computer, there are many tasks for which current computers are inadequate. For some of these tasks, conventional computers are fundamentally inadequate, because the time taken to find a solution grows very quickly as the size of the problem to be solved expands. Therefore, there has been research interest in some computer models that use biological processes, or the oddities ofquantum physics, to tackle these types of problems. For instance,DNA computingis proposed to use biological processes to solve certain problems.Because of the exponential division of cells, a DNA computing system could potentially tackle a ACCU Dell U4873 problem in a massively parallel fashion. However, such a system is limited by the maximum practical mass of DNA that can be handled.Quantum computers, as the name implies, take advantage of the unusual world of quantum physics. If a practical quantum computer is ever constructed, there are a limited number of problems for which the quantum computer is fundamentally faster than a standard computer. However, these problems, relating tocryptographyand, unsurprisingly, quantum physics simulations, are of considerable practical interest. These alternative models for computation remain research projects at the present time, and will likely find application only for those problems where conventional computers are inadequate.Other types of computersAnalog computerChemical computerDNA computerHuman computerMolecular nanotechnologyOptical computerQuantum computerWetware computerSee alsoUnconventional computing. http://phpfox.webtower.org/index.php?do=/blog/22599/batterij-acer-as09f34/ http://w1.lv/index.php?do=/blog/29924/as09f34/ http://www.archevani.com.ge/index.php?do=/blog/105/batterij-acer-as09f34/ http://www.madakasira.com/index.php?do=/blog/110816/batterij-acer-as09f34/ http://www.bc4arab.biz/index.php?do=/blog/4875/technology-has-been-affecting-almost-eve/&ModPagespeed=noscript http://actsbook.com/index.php?do=/blog/11/batterij-acer-as09f34/ http://www.love2dating.com/index.php?do=/blog/115413/how-to-buy-a-dell-latitude-d620-battery-online/ http://www.cutemsg.com/blog/7675/batterij-acer-as09f34/ GBguestbook
